Katrina - in cartoons as it happened 8/29 - 9/11
The following cartoons are the Katrina related comics we did. These were our very first cartoons, and as you will see, they reflect the dark nature of the crisis as it unfolded. There are 14 cartoons for 14 days, starting August 29th and going through September 11th. I'm breaking them into three groups for three posts, just to break it up.

Monday August 29th, Katrina hits
If you don't like crowds ...

Tuesday August 30th, New Orleans survivors try to get by while FEMA fiddles
The Looters v. The Lucky

Wednesday, August 31st - People dying in New Orleans and Bush is AWOL from the gulf coast, AGAIN
Where's Bush?

Thursday, September 1st - Fundamentalists call the New Orleans disaster God's vengeance
Vengeance?

6. I created this cartoon because of Katrina.
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 09:34 PM by Neil Lisst
I was so shocked to see Americans stranded a few hundred miles from me as the allegedly greatest nation on earth sat and watched it on tv without getting them the help they needed.

It's been a long time since I've been that ashamed of my country, probably the days of Watergate.

Glad you liked them.

I recruited my cartoonist quickly and we got busy. He didn't have nearly as much time to pour into it in the first few weeks, and we had to make the art cover more than one day's cartoon. The darkness was by design, and to underscore the protagonist's name, nihilist.

3. you really started hitting your stride
in the middle of the Katrina mess. I think Neil started finding himself a lot right in that time too.

7. He's an interesting character, whom we highlight less now.
We worked on character development following the Katrina series to let people know he's 24, he's out of the nest, has loving parents who are divorced, does like ladies, but doesn't have a steady, and is a journalist.

8. That's when we first started to try "funny"
Edited on Fri Dec-23-05 09:38 PM by Neil Lisst
It was dicey trying to inject too much humor into it after Katrina. But FEMA were such clowns, it had to be done.

11. Hey Neil Your Comic Work Is Great...
are you continuing to publish these cartoons. If so - where? Do you have a website where these can be viewed.

If not - you should continue. This should be syndicated and available all over the country (if not the world - global - pun intended).

Certainly our pResident is providing you material on a daily basis - you should take advantage of it and not just restrict your brand of political humor to Katrina.

We need more of this - as it cuts to the bone.

Thank you for your contribution.

13. Yes. They're always up.
The link in my signature takes you directly to the main page of the cartoon. We have no advertising, so we aren't trying to sell anyone anything.

In the beginning, we did 7 days a week, but that was just too much, so we cut back to Monday-Friday.

There are several tables of contents at the main page, and you can navigate from there.

We have had 9 of our cartoons, or about ten percent, published on a newspaper editorial page. I worked to get us published, but I have not signed any deals. We want maximum exposure of our ideas, and we're confident eventually we'll make a deal to get it published regularly with a chain or syndicate.

14. Glad you appreciate it!
I'm going to put together some of these threads over the holidays, to better explain the cartoon, the character, and the evolution of both.
