Does anyone know exactly what a Legislative Assistant does in Congress?

1. Since I interned on the Hill, I saw what LA's do first hand. They are the
ones who handle all the communication between lobbyists/interest groups and constituents. They take the meetings with say, the AFL-CIO or Sierra Club reps who are pushing some legislative issues, and hear their concerns. They then advise the Legislative Director, Chief of Staff, and the Congressman on what the groups concerns or priorities were, and even sometimes advise a point of view. They also handle a lot of constituent mail. There are usually a couple of LA's per House office, each handling their particular issue areas.

Legislative Correspondent

The staff member - L.C. for short - who answers correspondence and e-mails from constituents, lobbyists, and others. Members get so much mail that many have 2 or more LC"s to keep up with it.

Hundreds of letters and e-mails often come in on the same issue. LC"s draft a standard response to use to answer mail on the same subject. LC"s also prepare summaries for their Members of how much mail they got on specific issues and the views that were expressed.

Thanks for asking... I didn't know either. :)
