9. They were not protecting America.
They broke the law and violated the Constitution to subvert legitimate diplomacy to prevent war.

They were NOT protecting American lives.

They were protecting their plans to invade Iraq.

The families of almost 2200 service members were not protected. They were robbed of loved ones, for a lie, wrapped in more lies, that were illegally force-fed to an unwilling world.

They must be held accountable.

Most of the news media seems interested in reporting what Bush ate for Christmas dinner. That kind of "news" is never found on Raw Story.

The corporate news media is very practiced at ignoring stories like this one. They prefer to publish stories like the one about the woman who tried to swallow her cell phone: http://www.latimes.com/features/health/medicine/la-na-briefs26.4dec26,1,599207.story?coll=la-health-medicine

A Google news search produced 202 related articles on that.

Condoleezza Rice: President Bush's
National Security Adviser is
believed to have requested
the surveillance operation.

US accused of spying on Security Council delegates

March 3 2003
By Peter Fray
Europe Correspondent
London

America's top spy agency is reportedly conducting a secret surveillance campaign against UN Security Council delegations as part of its push to gain support for war against Iraq.

The operation, which involves intercepting home and office telephones and the emails of UN delegates in New York, has been reported in London's Observer. The countries targeted are Angola, Cameroon, Chile, Bulgaria, Guinea and Pakistan, whose votes will be crucial to the passing of a second British and US-sponsored UN resolution authorising force against Iraq.

<snip>

It refers to surveillance operations directed at UN Security Council members "to provide up-to-the-minute intelligence for Bush officials on the voting intentions of UN members regarding the issue of Iraq".

The memo advises NSA officials that the agency is "mounting a surge" aimed at gleaning information on how delegations on the Security Council will vote on any second resolution on Iraq and on policies, negotiating positions, alliances and dependencies..."

40. Actually it's Greek for "someone who shows/reveals the fig."
I'm not kidding. It's a slang word for "informer."

Its origins supposedly either involve Athens' fig embargo against Thebes or a rude gesture called "the fig" that has to do with female genitalia.

26. This Fits A Theory Of Mine
Concerning the real reason Bush quickly approved spying on Americans without benefit of court order.

Bush's Executive Order was issued on September 17, 2001, long before Bush started having serious problems with NSA.

My theory is that Bush was attempting to wiretap conversations between American's and Iraqi's or third party foreigners dealing with Saddam. An earlier report indicated that NSA started to push back after finding that at least 75 FISA requests had falsified data. Why would you need to falsify data to wiretap bin Laden operatives? You wouldn't.

My take is that Bush was looking for dirt against Saddam, even before 9/11, and the court wasn't buying it. Condi was simply expanding the scope of this snooping as Bush became more and more desperate for dirt on Saddam.

35. those 75 FISA requests - attempts to breach "the wall"
The wall prevented intelligence agents from pooling information with their law-enforcement counterparts.

January, 2003:

Secret Wiretaps from a Secret Court. For over two decades, there's been a secret court in the United States called the FISA court (short for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act). Its job is to authorize wiretaps on possible foreign spies and foreign agents. In 24 years, it has never turned down a government request for a wiretap, as best as any outsider can tell--until this year. This past summer the court said issued an opinion that said Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Justice Department were going way too far in their zeal for wiretaps. It cited 75 cases in which the Justice Department tried to sneak around rules to protect Americans from surveillance. Blue Chevigny reports on attempts to loosen up the rules on who the government spies on here in the U.S., and on this first-ever glimpse inside this secret court. (15 minutes)

27. OK, I guess I don't get the significance of this. Please educate me.
The fact that the US had spied on the UN during the run up to the Iraq vote isn't new news. I heard it before on the BBC. Spying has been happening in the UN for ages from various places - even Boutros Boutros Ghali was bugged at his office and at his residence.

From the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3494940.stm - "UN shrugs off bugging furore" - to quote from the article,

"Sounds like business as usual" muttered one diplomat. ... However the general feeling is that it is impossible to guarantee privacy in UN offices or the missions to the UN.

So we know who gave the order to spy on the UN... so Abscondi is violating the Vienna Convention for diplomats, but she isn't violating US law because she can.

We need to focus on El Presidente, because he is the one who broke the law. Apparently if I figure out the law as it is it is OK for America to spy on non-Americans but when it comes to their own they need to have all kinds of warrants and stuff. Now if Abscondi also is involved in the spying on Americans then perhaps she needs to be roped in too. This isn't itself proof that she's involved in the domestic spying situation, because the articles cited is old news and involved spying on foreign diplomats.

Maybe that's why the UN spying scandals didn't get media attention in the USA because it didn't involve Americans? Because the US media is so centered on the USA? Perhaps that's why there is a larger than normal percentage of people in the USA who doesn't know where Florida is and more importantly it is actually part of the USA? I certainly feel the US media is too US-centric and needs to expand its horizons more.

Ok. Rant over, but please tell me where I am wrong.

Mark.

old news but relevant news

Subject: Reflections of Iraq Debate/Votes at UN-RT Actions + Potential for Related Contributions
Importance: HIGH
Top Secret//COMINT//X1

All,

As you've likely heard by now, the Agency is mounting a surge particularly directed at the UN Security Council (UNSC) members (minus US and GBR of course) for insights as to how to membership is reacting to the on-going debate RE: Iraq, plans to vote on any related resolutions, what related policies/ negotiating positions they may be considering, alliances/ dependencies, etc - the whole gamut of information that could give US policymakers an edge in obtaining results favorable to US goals or to head off surprises. In RT, that means a QRC surge effort to revive/ create efforts against UNSC members Angola, Cameroon, Chile, Bulgaria and Guinea, as well as extra focus on Pakistan UN matters.

We've also asked ALL RT topi's to emphasize and make sure they pay attention to existing non-UNSC member UN-related and domestic comms for anything useful related to the UNSC deliberations/ debates/ votes. We have a lot of special UN-related diplomatic coverage (various UN delegations) from countries not sitting on the UNSC right now that could contribute related perspectives/ insights/ whatever. We recognize that we can't afford to ignore this possible source.

We'd appreciate your support in getting the word to your analysts who might have similar, more in-direct access to valuable information from accesses in your product lines. I suspect that you'll be hearing more along these lines in formal channels - especially as this effort will probably peak (at least for this specific focus) in the middle of next week, following the SecState's presentation to the UNSC.

Thanks for your help

with open arms and a flack jacket.

What a strange one she is. I remember * shoving her out there to absolutely lie about 911. "We never thought they'd use airplanes as weapons and slam them into buildings." (approx.) That finishes her in the history books. Anyone who followed this casually knows that there were known plans about planes including those against her boss.

Well, I guess once it's established that you're a craven liar, anything goes. She'll have lots of money, unless they get her on perjury some day, in which case, she can call Martha and get the low down on "Women's Prison."

She's as dirty and complicit as it gets. I heard a rumor that she's brilliant (Sharon? He loves her. Gee, I wonder why.) Yet if there is one person that you could point to for being responsible for 9-11, it's her. All existing anti-terror operations from Clinton's admin where essentially replaced by prezidential order to Dr. Rice, the National Security Adviser. I don't care what she wears, she really sucks. There is no way she should have been promoted let alone be being held up to be president.
