Kerry, the BCCI scandal, the Swiftboat liars and other overlapping
issues ...

I've been reading about the BCCI scandal off and on for over a year or two. Kerry helped expose it. Tonight I came across this particular author's point of view on it. He says:

"This is the story of how the wealthy and corrupt in Latin America managed to steal virtually every dollar lent to their countries by Western banks, creating the debt crisis of the 1980s; how heads of state such as Ferdinand Marcos, Saddam Hussein, Manuel Noriega, and others skimmed billions from their national treasuries and hid them in Swiss and Caymanian accounts forever free from snooping regulators; how Pakistan and Iraq got materials for nuclear weaponry and how Libya built poison-gas plants.

BCCI is also the story of how governments manage to put together arms deals with supposedly hostile governments, as in the case of Israel's clandestine trades with Arab states, or the United States' supplying weapons to both Iraq and Iran in violation of its own laws."

A tie to Pre-WMD lies??? Going back to 1991??

I wonder if anyone has ever researched the financers of the Swiftboat Liars to the BCCI folk?? It would be interesting, I think. Revenge looked like it was about Viet Nam but could have been about BCCI?

1. Have you read "The New War"?
Kerry wrote it in 1997. He was predicting a 9/11 type attack even back then. His description of what he predicted was eerily accurate.

In chapter 6, "The Globalization of Terror" he says:

"The terrorists of the late '90's and early 21st century will use more sophisticated means, and thus pose a more virulent threat to the health of Democratic societies by increasingly forcing them to trade liberty for security.

Though this country will continue to face danger from religious extremists, homegrown anarchists, and perennial bomber types, they are all in some sense "old news." The terrorists of tomorrow will be better armed and organized. It will take only one mega-terrorist event in any of the great cities of the world to change the world in a single day. As we shall see, that event could be nuclear, or could just as easily occur on the internet, but whether our sense of secure well-being ends with a bang or a whimper will not be the cause of debate."

Lots of stuff about BCCI in this book too. A great read.

3. No, I haven't but will order asap. Thanks! Check this reference out
to Osama in the BCCI link I posted above:

"Khalid bin Mahfouz was a key figure in the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, or BCCI, affair. Between 1986 and 1990, he was a top executive there, holding the position of operational director. His family held a 20 percent share in the bank at the time. He was charged in the United States in 1992 with tax fraud in the bank's collapse.

In 1995, held jointly liable in the BCCI's collapse, he agreed to a $245 million settlement to pay the bank's creditors, allowing them to indemnify a portion of the bank's clients. The specific charges against the bank were embezzlement and violation of American, Luxembourg, and British banking laws.

After dominating the financial news throughout the 1990s, the BCCI is now at the center of the financial network put in place by Osama bin Laden's main supporters....:

I alway thought Kerry was brave to stick his neck out there like that. He had to know he pissed off very powerful people in the past with his hearings ...just look at the names involved ....

8. Oh yes
I wish they touched more on it in the last election. :( It would've been great to use. How he stud up to the corporate whores and all that. Maybe he didn't because he thought it might be too dangerous with his family and others working with him and the Edwards'. How amazing of what he said about the terrorist attack.

10. Very true.
Kerry has pissed off a lot of people in his search for, and his exposure of the truth. It's no wonder so many are so quick to smear him. He's made enemies in high places, that's for sure.

7. Can you find it in any book store?
I'd love to buy it. Or amazon.com? I have some money left over from a Christmas if the book is out there to order.

9. It is available on Amazon.
In the past, I have avoided them, due to a heavy Republican leaning in their political donations, and the blatantly partisan (and ugly) politics they have allowed posters to get away with on their site. They not only allowed, but encouraged customers to swift boat Kerry up one wall and down the next in their reviews of that cock smoker John O'Neill's fictional piece of crap book, although ad hominem attacks on individuals are supposed to be forbidden on the site.

I have heard rumors that they have donated to Dems in this past year, though I still am not interested in doing business with them.

Here's more info:

I will totally leave it up to you to decide. If you can find the book elsewhere, great. If you choose to buy from Amazon, I'll at least be glad you got the chance to read the book.

Almost certainly at B&N too, though I didn't look.

Either is a better choice than Amazon, for "blueness".

23. You beat me to it
You can also see the beginnings of how Kerry thinks re: terrorism in that book. If they would have listened to him back then, there would not have been 9/11. And they acted like we'd be less same with him, when he was actually an expert on the subject. Makes me wanna cry sometimes.

2. Maybe not directly, but by all accounts money men in both
parties had been bought off by BCCI - in one article the extent to which the Democratic party went to stop Kerry was amazing. Apparently, they even had Jackie Kennedy - who he respected and valued as a friend - call him to suggest that Clark Clifford (not sure of name - was Secretary of Defense under Johnson) was their friend. Kerry continued anyway.

I think the funders of the SBVT were suppose to be Texas based Bushies.

5.  I hadn't thought of that but did think that one of the reasons Kerry
spoke so infrequently about BCCI was that Clinton (as well as Bush1) did so little to help on this. From Vector's quote - you can see how clearly Kerry understood the danger.

BLM posted a list of things that Kerry felt still needed investigation when his committee was taken away from him - so he had no supoena power. The top item on the list was that he was concerned that Pakistan would sell its nucleur technology which was developed with BCCI funding. The Khan network did of course sell the technology to North Korea, Libya, and Iran. (Even when he had the committee - there's one picture from a hearing room - only one lone Senator is sitting there asking questions.)

Reading these things convinced me that Kerry was as unique in the 80s and 90s as he was in the 70s. Getting a Democrat - like Hillary in 2008- will not make up for not having a President Kerry.

Because they know he will use his authority to reopen the investigations that were left unfinished and bring the whole corrupt cabal to justice.

and done things it shouldn't need to look more closely at Kerry. Bill Clinton certainly didn't fight these people - I see no reason to think Hillary will. Of all the contenders I don't know of any "profiles in courage" like moments - where they risk their future to do the right thing - Kerry has at least 3 times - Protesting Vietnam, Contra/drugs and BCCI.

If we REALLY want to get back to values, he seems the one likely to insist on doing the right thing.

28. I had read that Kerry spent almost a year on a poor Indian tribe's
reservation to work and he lived there. He felt he had to do it to "understand" their struggles. Can you even picture Bush working with a Native American that wasn't "in the money" with a casino? There are hundreds of tribes who don't have casinos and they are being squeezed by this administration ...

17. Well, Clinton campaigned with him at the end, and before that,
Clinton had his heart problem.

Maybe Clinton could have done more, but I find it hard to square "Clinton didn't support Kerry enough" with the rally in Philly which was very soon after Clinton had his heart surgery. I just don't know.

13. Rather than SBVT, the question might be whether
these ultra rich people who the BCCI investigation challanged indirectly own parts of the media. Or even whether it's that they are friends of friends - and he's challanging the system. (What mystifies me is why when he has been brave enough and honest enough to pursue this the far LW which should relize the courage needed and the risks in addition to understanding why someone needs to stand up to this don't give him credit. (The only thing I can think of is that they resent his ability to thrive in the world of priviledge while doing these things.)

15. It's amazing how many of the BCCI players are still around.
And how deeply they are tied to the Bush Family. Noreiga was a just lousy with Bush connections. Look at this from 5/1/90

But all of BCCI's previous controversies have been dwarfed by the issue of drug money.

One former BCCI customer who was allegedly involved in the drug trade is Manuel Noriega, the former Panamanian dictator. In February 1988 Noriega was indicted in Miami and Tampa on federal drug changes. Around the time of the indictments, two convicted traffickers testified at Senate hearings that they'd dealt with Noriega--and with BCCI--in Panama. One of the traffickers, Leigh Bruce Ritch, testified that he'd been referred to BCCI by Cesar Rodriguez, one of Noriega's closest associates. The traffickers' testimony was buttressed by Jose Blandon, a former Panamanian diplomat. BCCI, according to Blandon, had been used for money laundering by both Rodriguez and Enrique Pretelt, another associate of Noriega's, who at the time was under indictment in the United States on drug charges.

In the wake of the Noriega hearings, the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism, Narcotics, and International Operations, chaired by John Kerry of Massachusetts, launched a secret inquiry into BCCI. On September 30, 1988, the Kerry committee deposed Amjad Awan, BCCI's country manager for Panama from 1981 to 1984. Awan, who'd acted as Noriega's personal banker, said that the dictator had channeled millions of dollars through his BCCI account; most of the deposits had been in cash. Noriega had been so pleased with the service he'd received, according to Awan, that he'd made a personal appeal to Abedi not to transfer Awan from Panama. Abedi had gone ahead with the transfer anyway, but Awan had assured Noriega that "I would be available to him whenever he needed me."

Kerry's subcommittee wasn't the only unit of the U.S. government that was taking a close look at BCCI. At the same time that Awan was testifying, he and several of his BCCI colleagues were the targets of an undercover investigation of money laundering that had been launched in 1986 by the U.S. Customs Service. A customs agent posing as a money launderer had channeled millions of dollars in cocaine money through BCCI. Awan was one of several BCCI officers who'd allegedly been eager to help out.

32. here's a pre-election story that talks about Kerry and the BCCI scandal
Edited on Wed Dec-28-05 11:40 PM by NVMojo
" This four-generation evolution of the Bushes involves multiple links that could become Bush's election-year Achilles' heel — if a clever and tough 2004 Democratic opponent can punch and slice at them. Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kerry, the clear Democratic front-runner, could be best positioned to do so. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he investigated the Iran-Contra and Bank of Credit and Commerce International scandals, both of which touched George H.W. Bush's Saudi, Iraqi and Middle Eastern arms-deal entanglements.

Washington lawyer Jack Blum, the ace investigator for Kerry's subcommittee back then, is said to be advising him now, which could be meaningful. Ironically, the Bush family's century of involvement in oil, armaments and global intrigue has never been at the center of the national debate since the Bushes starting running for president in 1980. University of Philadelphia in the speech he gave on the War on Terror. It had been labeled as a major speech - but I thyink only CSPAN really covered it. It was shortly after the NYU Iraq speech - which was the other major speech of that month.
