In the Nixon impeachment, we had Woodward and Bernstein to keep hammering
home the truth to the American public. Now with the Bush mess, do we have a modern day equivalent to them? I would think some reporters would like to make a name for themselves and go down in history as the one that helped give the Bush Administration their come-uppance.

I know Woodward and Bernstein DID have their bosses behind them on the Nixon coverage. Any modern day reporter would have to have their bosses on their side, and I'm not sure there is one of them with the guts to take a stand against corruption.

1. 2 thoughts. The corporate influence into newsrooms and papers
changes who they are really serving. News people now seem to want to get famous writing books and becoming talking heads. Oh and number 3, everything is so formated now that there really does not seem to be any room or time for digging in the weeds. There are few rare ones that stray from the reservation but for the most part its all cookie cutter now.

2. Sy Hersh was also quite influential in the Watergate stories.
He never quite caught up to W&B but he had some scoops. He's also still at it today.

3. During the Nixon era, about 50 different companies controlled the media.

Today, only SIX CORPORATIONS share the wealth.

Our biggest problem in America today is consolidated corporate media. There's no accountability left.

4. We also had...
major (and popular) environmental, civil rights, and anti-war movements going on at the time and the public demanded coverage-- the press more often reacts to the public than leads it. Aside from Fox, they report the news that sells.

The WoodSteins out there (and there are some, like Palast) aren't particularly influential these days without other voices being raised. What we need more than a "less controlled" press are charismatic leaders like King who are outside of the corporate and political loops and huge, resounding issues for them to lead us on. Shrub's polls may in the dumpster and there are groups out there fighting the good fight, but it just hasn't sunk in the way it did back in Nixon's time.

The press is not blameless, but the real blame goes to our friends and neighbors who just don't give a shit about what's going on. If they did, the media would surely report it for the circulation and ratings.
