Note from B_E_B: The Bush protests are one thing, the "Death to America" bullshit is another. That sentiment only makes me want to invite "Wednesday's protesters" to go fuck themselves, whether their anger is fueled by Bush or NOT. Ignorance is ignorance, hate is hate, and I'd be very curious to see what would happen if men and women took to the streets of America chanting "Death To India." Just my 2 cents worth...not looking for approval or agreement or a lecture on political correctness from anyone, thank you very much.

NEW DELHI - Tens of thousands of Indians waving black and white flags and chanting "Death to Bush!" rallied Wednesday in New Delhi to protest a visit by President Bush. Surindra Singh Yadav, a senior police officer in charge of crowd control, said as many as 100,000 people, most of them Muslim, had gathered in a fairground in central New Delhi ordinarily used for political rallies.



"Whether Hindu or Muslim, the people of India have gathered here to show our anger. We have only one message — killer Bush go home," one of the speakers, Hindu politician Raj Babbar, told the crowd.



Bush arrives in India later Wednesday for a three-day visit focused on strengthening the emerging strategic partnership between India and the United States. Dozens of protests have been planned by Islamic leaders and communist politicians.



While Bush remains more popular in India than he is in many other countries, some here object to U.S. policies, especially in Iraq and Afghanistan. India, an overwhelmingly Hindu nation of more than 1 billion people, has the world's second-largest population of Muslims. Wednesday's protesters carried placards that read: "Bully Bush, Go Home," and "Death to America, Death to Bush."

and I agree - especially about a middle class getting self absorbed. They have a large and growing middle class and demand has grown for consumer goods.

Unfortunately it almost seems like the human condition though - you start doing better for yourself and forget the rest of society.

India has made great progress, and its Democracy is likely its greatest asset, but I sense a huge disconnect between the middle class and politicians (many seem extremely apathetic to politics - to the point of cyncism where their vote doesn't matter). Corruption is also rampant. The ME ME ME mentality is common among the middle class.

I have some family there and thaht's the sense I get among some.

it does bother me that other countries will involve themselves in "death to America" chants and anti-american rallies because they are obviously not paying attention to our politics. If they were informed the leaders would best send the message of anti-Bush and not the totality of all Americans. If they were paying attention, they could stand in solidarity with at least 1/2 the American people who are vehemently anti-bush ourselves.

I understand their anger, but I don't agree with this particular global sentiment to all americans. Not cool.

we as a people, as a nation are soley responsible for allowing our leaders to engage in imperliast militarism in their regions - we as a people, caused the deaths of hundreds of millions around the world, certainly hundreds of thousands if not more in their part of the globe, and we the people have not done our due dilligence to be decent citizen nation. our trade policies by the way has also done great harm to their agricultural communties, more than most people here, are aware.

they have a lot of reason to hate us and to wish that we simply vanished from this planet. I can't personally say that I blame them for those sentiments, it is a natural human thing to hate the person that is murdering you.

It is just a shame that it becomes such a black and white issue.

All too often, people of a country hate ALL the people of the enemy country, when the hate would be more properly directed to the ones in power.

It's human nature to see the group and its leader as synonymous. Please don't blame Indians for expressing their anger in that way.

Because if you work in a "defense" plant, with no union, you will not be there long afterward.
If you're with the police department, some major harassment from your partners.
If you're in public office, protesting in the street will lose your corporate backing.

5 years and one failure of a president makes a lot of difference.
I was unable to find the pictures I remember from Clinton's 2000 visit to India. These pictures showed him walking openly among huge crowds of locals.
Some of Bill Clinton's Pro-Corporate economic policies have been devastating to the American Working Class, but America has never had a more capable represenative on the Foreign Stage.

I never see why people make a big deal out of overseas protest. There is always someone somewhere that is going to protest something. Its called freedom...

The artwork on the signs is about the best I've seen lately. When the Republicans get knocked out of government and half of the Party leadership has their citizenship revoked for high crimes, I'll bet dollars to dimes that they'll outsource their protest gear to these guys.

Most of the protestors were communist parties (who hate anything/everything due to historical reasons - US is an imperialist power, etc) and Muslim parties (who apparently hate anything/everything American due to wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Cartoon issue). Dont think the hindu right wing opposition or the ruling parties hate us over there.

I bet some of us might be uncomfortable with those "Death to USA", "Kill Bush" chants raised by these people. Though I hail from Texas, am not a Bush supporter, but I'd be a tad bit angry if he were murdered in a foreign country by Islamic terrorists or rabid communists.

While there are always protests for US presidents, this is very unique. No other individual has been so disliked world wide in probably half a century.
