Pizza Magnate Seeks Catholic-Governed Town

By BRIAN SKOLOFF, Associated Press Writer
Wed Mar 1, 2:08 PM ET

NAPLES, Fla. - If Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan has his way, a new town being built in Florida will be governed according to strict Roman Catholic principles, with no place to get an abortion, pornography or birth control.

The pizza magnate is bankrolling the project with at least $250 million and calls it "God's will."

Civil libertarians say the plan is unconstitutional and are threatening to sue.

The town of Ave Maria is being constructed around Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university to be built in the United States in about 40 years. Both are set to open next year about 25 miles east of Naples in southwestern Florida.

Snip...

Gov. Jeb Bush, at the site's groundbreaking earlier this month, lauded the development as a new kind of town where faith and freedom will merge to create a community of like-minded citizens. Bush, a convert to Catholicism, did not speak specifically to the proposed restrictions.

4. And with no porn I predict the male population will be about zero
So abortion and birth control won't really be necessary anyway.

5. Back in the late '90's
when I was attending Colorado State, I would order one of their personal pizzas for delivery at home while I was studying. This was done so frequently, I was on first name basis with most employees. I then found out that Monaghan is one of the largest contributors to the anti-choice movement. I called the store, told them I was sorry, I would not be doing business with them any longer, and my reason behind the decision. The young woman stated "But he makes his contributions from her personal funds", to which I responded "And just where do you think his 'personal funds' come from?" It has been at least 10 years since I have had one of their pizzas.

6. I have no problem with this
IF he buys the land, builds the buildings, sells homes to folks that want to live the and take no state or federal money to support his town.

7. Unconstitutional premise. You can't secede as a municipality
in order to avoid constitutional obligations. It's not a matter of local rule. In order to be included in the state and in the federal union of states (U.S.A.), autonomy is sacrificed to a certain extent, thereby negating the possibility of civil libertarianism. If Monahan were to have a big piece of property with a big building, invited people to live there with his rules, it would be different as residents would have to submit to his limitations on their choices. It's like you're a guest in someone's house ("My house, my rules") Here, people will be purchasing real estate, building on their land, and residing in the municipality without being given a choice on birth control, pornography, etc. which the Supreme Court has decided is legal and accessible to citizens. And you can't restrict which kind of people can purchase land as it would violate civil rights laws.
