FIGHTIN DEMS: Duckworth snags Obama for TV ad

Duckworth snags Obama for TV ad

February 24, 2006

BY SCOTT FORNEK Political Reporter

Playing one of her trump cards, congressional hopeful Tammy Duckworth began airing a television commercial featuring U.S. Sen. Barack Obama on Thursday -- marking the freshman Democratic senator's first appearance in a TV ad for another candidate.

"Every so often, you meet someone in public life who's truly extraordinary, someone you know will make a difference," Obama says in the 30-second spot. "A person of conscience and proven courage, Tammy Duckworth's a leader we can count on."

A wounded Iraq War veteran, Duckworth is one of three Democrats hoping to replace retiring Republican U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde in the west suburban 6th Congressional District. The others are Rolling Meadows software engineer Christine Cegelis and Wheaton College professor Lindy Scott.

Duckworth spokesman Billy Weinberg said the commercial will run on CNN, MSNBC and other cable stations.

Giannoulias spot next

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs said about a half-dozen politicians have asked the South Side Democrat to appear in their TV spots, but Duckworth -- whom Obama has already endorsed -- is the first he agreed to.

"She's got a compelling story and is someone we think can bring real change to Washington," Gibbs said.

3. Damn Straight Cegalis
is the real choice in this race...DCCC is out actually snub Cegalis with this all out support of Duckworth. Cegalis is running the best grassroots campaign, and is running for the people in her district, vs. someone who was flown in town to run. Check out this article just today on Cegalis in Daily Kos....VOTE CEGALIS!!!!!! http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/3/143638/8463

We don't need another DCCC stamp of approval candidate. I honor Duckworth's service, but the DCCC are playing games again....

15. Duckworth was not flown in.
The DCCC hopes to win this seat. If Cegelis is the choice she will win in all likelyhood.

4. Question: Does Duckworth live in the district?
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 07:10 PM by Ignacio Upton
I was reading a post on Daily Kos about Cegelis vs. Duckworth that claimed she lives 3 miles outside the district. I think that Constitutionally-speaking you don't have to live in your district, but politically-speaking it's a dumb move not to. Kos over there is getting a lot of flack from his readers for being accomodating, of Duckworth (he hasn't officially taken sides in this race, but he did feature Duckworth as part of his "Fighting Dems" series.) because the way in which the DCCC has supported her is allegedly similar to what he opposes in his book.

5. Its a little bit of a strange story
First of all, the 6th is the district she grew up in. But as you know she's a paraplegic and her friends and family built a house that was custon made for her to suit her disabilities and that house is 3 miles outside the district. But all of her friends and family that she grew up with is in the 6th.

7. If Democrats can't even elect a double amputee Veteran from this
war that we didn't have to fight...but which most Democrats in power voted for......we are in deep, deep shit!

10. Oh, my, is that your only criterium for a candidate? What about Christine
who lives there. That strikes me odd, that people are really thinking that being a wounded veteran should give one more authenticity than being a hard working liberal candidate.

8. Has Duckworth done any actual campaigning in the district whe wants to
represent? Has she done the hard work of meeting people in her district or does she think that she is a New Dem aristocrat and Obama will win the district for her? I heard that she's been absent at Democratic meetings in her district and she can't be bothered to meet with local reporters.

Did you read the post? that said....

11. You didn't answer my question..
Has she campaigned in the district she wants to represent? Has shed built an organization rooted in the district she wants to represent or is she relying on Washington Beltway $$ and consultants?

12. Today there are lots of ways to campaign
Internet, newspapers, ads, mailing out information etc. And I love how you all are belittling her supporters. Would you be screaming about this if it was her opponent getting all this attention? Of course not. Hypocrites.

14. Yes, she has campaigned in the District.
She has not built a grassroots organization, she has been recovering from wounds received in Iraq. Durbin met her while she was on Capitol Hill representing wounded vets. He was impressed and new that Hyde vacated his seat in the 6th, which he has held for 32 years. Her consultants are from Illinois. Her money is from all over. She has the support of the Illinois AFL-CIO and both Illinois Dem Senators as well as a number of Illinois Reps.
