How many think that the DSCC would've forced Wellstone out in 1990...
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 07:46 PM by Hippo_Tron
If they thought that they had a chance at beating Boschwitz? When Wellstone went to talking to John Breaux, head of the DSCC at the time, Breaux couldn't grasp the idea that Wellstone was going to win with an entirely grassroots operation and not raise a lot of money. The DSCC pretty much considered his race a lost cause, but they didn't think that they could unseat Boschwitz anyway so they just let him run. Had they thought this race was competative and been able to find a "better" candidate who would be more willing to do things the traditional way, they would have put huge amounts of resources into defeating Wellstone in the primary.

Paul certainly showed them

1. Breaux was head of DSCC?
wow, we've really progressed since then. Breaux was among a handfull of really bad dems, right up there with Zell Miller.

2. It was a different time
Breaux was a centrist back when compromising with the GOP wasn't compromising with the fascists. To be fair, unlike Zig-Zag Zell, Breaux strongly supported Kerry in '04. He's by no means a champion for progressive values, but he's almost a saint compared to Louisiana's Republicans.

3. The DSCC hasn't had much luck with their choices here
To put it politely, they know shit about the politics of this state.

I might go so far as to say that Wellstone probably would not have beat Boschwitz in the first place if the DSCC HAD backed him because for sure they would not have allowed him to run and win a Wellstone type of campaign.

The irony of it all is that Boschwitz was head of the RSCC the year Wellstone defeated him!
