Blagojevich (D) v Topinka (Nazi), IL Governor's Race
Looks like Rod Blagojevich hung on against Edwin Eisendrath yesterday, in spite of the reek of corruption surrounding his administration. He will now have to face one of the most popular state treasurers in recent memory in November, and I really do worry that we might lost the Governor's Mansion here in IL this time out. I'm not sure that the general landslide of public opinion against Rethuglicans will save him unless he puts of a really amazingly good campaign.

Comments?

1. There was another thread about Topinka posted somewhere.
Apparently, she's too liberal for the fundies becase she marched in a gay pride parade (gasp!), so maybe the loonies will sit this one out.

2. It's going to be a tough campaign for Blagojevich
No question about it. Topinka is the best candidate the Republicans could have run (short of Jim Edgar announcing his candidacy)

It would have been easier for Blagojevich if Oberweis had won...Oberweis is too right wing. But Topinka is a moderate (well, by Republican standards) and very popular.

Blagojevich, I understand, has a fairly large war chest amassed for the general election. But with the ethical issues that have dogged him, he's in a serious fight. We just might lose this one.

3. Too much doom and gloom here.
Blago is nowhere close to being ideal, but Topinka and her Nazi Lt Goc pick will not get elected in November. Illinois is a blue state, trending more blue over the years, and the Dems will come out in droves to make sure a crook like Topinka, and a Nazi Thug like Birkett don't get anywhere close to a win...

4. Right and Blago won with 68% of the votes where Topinka beat the milk man
by only 6%. (I haven't seen the final results so that 6% could have changed)

and I can't see ALL of those remaining 30% who voted for the other 3 candidates voting for that woman.....SHE IS SO DAMNED OBNOXIOUS. Blogojevich will win. PLUS....I think she's connected to some repuke corruption, isn't she?http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-060306topinka,1,87320.story?track=rss

If she is, Rod will expose her. She had better be squeaky clean.

Blagojevich, who did little campaigning and rarely acknowledged his opponent, easily defeated former Chicago alderman Edwin Eisendrath for the Democratic nomination with 68 percent of the vote in unofficial returns.

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=1753530

With 84 percent of precincts reporting, Topinka had 251,605 votes, or 38 percent, and Oberweis had 210,165 votes, or 32 percent. State Sen. Bill Brady had 19 percent, and Chicago businessman Ron Gidwitz had 10 percent. Internet journalist Andy Martin trailed with less than 1 percent.

Blagojevich wasted no time criticizing Topinka, questioning her plan to review his universal health care program for children to make sure the state can afford it.

``I don't know what she's thinking when she says no to health care for kids,'' he said.

5. Was it Birkett I heard say that Illinois didn't want abortion "on demand?"
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 12:35 PM by in_cog_ni_to
and Topinka agreed with him? I know Oberweiss was spewing his hateful crap about gays and abortion, but I thought I heard Birkett say something about outlawing abortion in Illinois?

7. He said abortion "on demand" for 14 year-olds w/ot parental consent...
..conveniently side-stepping the issue about why parental consent is necessary if the father impregnated the 14 yr-old to begin with...

Birkett is the nazi attack dog, and topinka pretends to be the moderate...

Don't forget, Birkett is the guy that railroaded an innocent man onto death row, and even when DNA evidence cleared him of the crime STILL REFUSES to believe that he got the wrong man...He is a fucking right-wing pig.

6. Damn...I Wanted Cow Boy Uberweis
Judy should provide plenty of entertainment with her scandals and her day-glo Ms. Clarol: Bozo shade hair and the Repugnicans continue to beat each other up.

My only hope for Uberweis is that one of the illegals he hires to run his ice cream factory pisses in his pistachio!

9. SooOOo.. question for those in Illinois
I'm not familiar with the Governor there.. but I was reading the posts here and am puzzled.

Which of the two politicians in your state would be considered to be more corrupt?

Blagojevich or Hastert ???

I'm reading here that DU'ers are concerned that a Rethug may now be able to beat your Governor..

...But I'm not reading anything about how John Laesch can beat Hastert.

Why is it that the D-Governor is corrupt so is likely to be beaten by an R.. But the R-Congressman who is also corrupt isn't likely to beaten by an incredible D-candidate?

Thanks for any clarification..

11. Hastert without a doubt.
But the media won't talk about him.

12. Because Hastert's district is overwhelmingly Republican, while
the entire state is much more balanced. Thanks to gerrymandering there are few districts that could actually go either way.

13. Ok... that pretty much answers my question..
So just like Delay's district in Texas, ReTHUGS would rather stick with a lying, corrupt bastard over a war veteran - just because the veteran happens to be a Democrat..

Un-freaken-believable.

14. Delay is in real danger of loosing his seat
He is currently trailing his Democratic opponent in opinion polls. Perhaps if Hastert were indicted that seat would be in play. Short of that, I don't think that most of his constituents believe that he is crook.

15. Rod will have a tough fight, but can win I think.
I think this becuase the blue Chicago area and St. Clair Co. (another blueish area) has a lot more people than red rural Illinois. This is just something I've noticed over there.
