CNN founder Ted Turner blasts media, Bush

(Atlanta, Georgia-AP) March 28, 2006 - Ted Turner took shots Tuesday night at the media for its coverage of sex and violence, at himself for losing control of the cable network he founded and at the Bush administration for the war in Iraq.

During a symposium in Atlanta where he was being honored for promotion of global understanding, Turner said there is a lot of superfluous news - such as what he called "the pervert of the day."

Snip...

As for Bush, Turner didn't waste time offering his political views. He said the country can't afford the war in Iraq and that "bombing isn't a way of changing people's minds."

Turner said Bush lacks a true understanding of the world. He referred to the president as a "reformed alcoholic" with "his finger on the nuclear trigger."

White House spokeswoman Maria Tamburri said in response that "Iraq remains a central front in the war on terror."

She had no immediate comment on what Turner said about the president and alcohol use.

16. That was an engineered coup - BFEE had inflated AOL ala Enron and waved
a big lie at Turner. I am certain their goal was to deflate Turner's assets as much as possible so they could move him out of a position of influence in the news media.

The GOP fascists have worked furiously since the 80s to buy up control of the broadcast news media so they could control public opinion.

The best move for Dems, at this point, would be to EXPOSE that control at every opportunity.

13. Ted Turner was battling cancer when he sold out.
I am REALLY sorry he sold out, but I'm very glad he's still around. He almost wasn't.

It took a lot out of him, and I don't think he's got another "network build" in him.

The man worked hard all his life (and, of course, played pretty hard a time or two :) ), so he should be entitled to a private life if he so chooses.

I just wish we had a NEW, UP & COMING TeeVee mogul who is solidly on the liberal side, who will be around for years & years.

That's how long it will take to get things straightened out after the republican fiasco.

We need someone like him to train younger people how to build networks that are free, fair and open.

27. I remember Ted Turner back in his early days
in Atlanta, when he first had "Channel 17". It was a little mom and pop station (literally - he and his first wife ran it, and as I recall there were other family members on board) that showed reruns of shows like "I Love Lucy", music videos, televangelists (on Sunday morning) and so on. He was smart and ambitious, and went from strength to strength (splitting up with his wife along the way). I was so proud of him when he started CNN.

I miss Ted Turner.

20. If Dems get back the executive, make he or Bill Moyers chair of the FCC
Edited on Wed Mar-29-06 12:43 PM by calipendence
We need someone like Turner or Moyers with a good set of values as well as understanding of the media marketplace to run it and restore it's mission to prevent consolidation and control of the message like it has evolved to and move away to just being an arm of censorship that it is currently.

23. Ted made a similar statement/speech last year at media symposium.
Since Ted's such a do-er, why doesn't he start "acting" on his displeasure with the current media, and open...or HELP start opening a new cable news channel more in line with his vision.
