Photos from Tuesday's NAACP N.O. Election action in Baton Rouge, LA
Members and national leaders of the NAACP rallied in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on the second day of the legislative session to protest the illegal election scheduled for April 22, 2006 in New Orleans.

The Greater Covington (LA) contingent was the first to arrive.

Lobbying continues in an attempt to secure satellite voting centers around America for displaced New Orleans voters.

We'll keep you posted.

2. Standing for those who can not be here to vote!
If we don't stand for the displaced voters, who will?

From Bill Quigley:
"The people already back are much more affluent
than the pre-Katrina New Orleans. The city is also
much whiter. Many of those already back in New
Orleans are not so sure that all of New Orleans should
be rebuilt. The consequence of that is not everyone
will be allowed to return. Planners and politicians
openly suggest turning poor neighborhoods into green
spaces. No one yet has said they want to turn their
own neighborhood into green space - only other
people's neighborhoods - usually poor people's
neighborhoods. Those who disagree are by and large
not here."

3. K&R - this is a travesty.

More than a travesty. I cannot believe our nation would...

Yeh. I can believe it.

On edit: I haven't done this before, but to hell with it. I signed up and became a member. I've worked (politically) with NAACP members since 1969. Never signed up before, figured they didn't need another white hippie chick. But this is too damn serious, that after 35 years (that I've been involved) we STILL can't enfranchise, we STILL work to block votes - hell with it. I joined.

10. Panel sinks out-of-state vote bill
BATON ROUGE -- A bill to let displaced Louisiana voters cast ballots in out-of-state centers failed by one vote Wednesday in a Senate committee....

...The Rev. Jesse Jackson, a friend of Fields, asked the panel to approve the bills as a way to reach out to scattered Louisiana voters. "People are living in exile," he said.

He said the nation has hosted voting for Mexicans, Poles and Iraqis living in the United States who were unable to travel home to vote, "but we have not done it for the people of New Orleans." Elections for mayor and other city offices will be April 22....

11. Push continues for displaced voters
Black lawmakers continued Wednesday to push bills to expand opportunities for hurricane-displaced voters to participate in upcoming elections.

They met with limited success despite support from a national civil-rights leader, the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

A Senate panel approved a bill to require absentee voting ballots to be sent to all evacuee voters, even if they don’t ask for one.

The same panel nixed the idea of setting up satellite voting centers outside of Louisiana. The activity comes with major municipal elections looming in New Orleans later this month and warnings from Sen. Cleo Fields, D-Baton Rouge, and other proponents that lack of voter access could lead to contested election results and lawsuits....
