Illegal immigrants become issue in race for California governor

With thousands of Californians taking to the streets because of the national debate about illegal immigration, the candidates for governor are starting to hear tough questions on the volatile issue that has dramatically influenced past statewide elections.

Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and one of his Democratic challengers, Treasurer Phil Angelides, at separate appearances Tuesday criticized the federal government for failing to adequately secure the borders.

Schwarzenegger also called for an increase in the number of legal immigrants who can fill jobs in California while Angelides said college-age students living in California illegally still should be eligible to pay in-state tuition.

Angelides' Democratic opponent, Controller Steve Westly, also has talked in recent days about border security and a way for the state to deal with an estimated 3 million illegal immigrants now here. <snip>
