CNN criticized Dems for having no plan, but ignored Real Security plan
Thu, Mar 30, 2006 2:54pm EST

After repeatedly reporting Democrats lacked plan, CNN ignored party's new national security strategy

Snip…

Over the past year, CNN hosts, anchors, and reporters have repeatedly commented on the Democratic Party's purported lack of a clear plan or concrete set of alternatives on issues ranging from Social Security to the war in Iraq. But on the day that Democratic leaders announced a broad national security strategy, CNN barely covered this development, instead devoting an hour and a half of uninterrupted coverage to a speech by President Bush on Iraq, his third in two weeks. Moreover, when CNN finally reported on the Democrats' national security plan, it omitted any details about the proposals put forth by the congressional leaders.

The following are examples from the past year of CNN personalities addressing the Democrats' purported lack of ideas on a variety of issues, national security chief among them:

Snip…

In a discussion with CNN senior political analyst Bill Schneider and Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund, CNN host Lou Dobbs commented, "Democrats haven't come up with a single message, a straightforward proposal or plan." (Lou Dobbs Tonight, 10/13/05)

CNN host Wolf Blitzer has repeatedly referenced a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll which found that 70 percent of Americans believe Democrats have no clear plan for Iraq. "The Democrats seem to be all over the place," he said on one occasion after reading the poll numbers. (Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer, 3/12/06)

11. Tweety broke into laughter, then opened with a Neo-Thug's focus on
Pelosi holding the plan upside down.

The lil blonde chatterbox could not be more superficial.

best ignored because it did not reflect a strong and credible National Security opposition.
It is a shame because we have the best people and great leader ship in our nominee, his team and
folks like Clark, Levin, Murtha.

Democrats could have rolled out their program with a team heavy on decorated veterans, led by
its presidental nominee, presented with gravitas and evicerating rhetoric. But they chose not to.
We continue to pay a heavy price for the Party's desire to play leadership games between election
cycles, rather rally around the leader.

14. Personally, I don't think Pelosi is helping our cause. When she
speaks, she sounds afraid. Maybe she is or maybe she isn't, but I don't think her feeble little objections of Republicanism is the strong stuff we need.

5. Oh but of course. We've had a plan all along
But we could spell it out, light it on fire, and dance around it nekkid singing God Bless America, and the "liberal" media would still ignore it.

9. Expressing an opinion is not a tactic
It is, oddly enough, expressing an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

So you disagree that the media is not our friend?

15. Accepted. Indeed, it will not change in the short term
but knowing that's part of the problem is necessary if we're going to find a way around the problem.

I do wish Harry Reid, whom I rather like, would use name-brand Dems to sell these ideas. It would help if our side was more media savy in general.

10. Blaming the media is not a tactic....it's a factual reason....
When you have CNN stating that the Democrats have no plan....but they forget to....OOPS..., tell its viewership that Bush blathered for a real long time yesterday specifically because although he has no fucking plan, he wanted to make sure the Democrats got no coverage and co-opted their press conference with his pretend one.....

yeah...the media is who is to blame...by way of omission, manipulation and just plain ol' propaganda.

Hope they can sleep at night with the blood on their hands.....

Well of course they can, which is the biggest part of the problem.

16. Out of sight, out of their minds:
Part of the plan of keeping the Democratic press conference off the air is allowing the "gatekeepers" to decide what was said. As usual they just make shit up. How can the public know if what is being said is true? Well, they can't because they weren't permitted to see the press conference. Voila!

So what's the point of taking questions, if not to answer them? Could it be to simply appear to be answering questions? Or just to repeat, repeat, repeat?

Yesterday, you almost got the feeling that he was just talking to run down the clock.

But why would he do that? One possible reason yesterday was: To preempt any television coverage of a press conference at which leading Democrats were unveiling their Bush-bashing security agenda.

Indeed, Bush's event had originally been scheduled for 1:20 p.m. yesterday. But Tuesday afternoon, the White House suddenly moved it up to 12:50. The Democratic press conference was scheduled to start at 1. Bush finally wrapped up his talk at 2:22. Anyone know when the Democrats stopped talking? Anybody see anyone in the audience giving him hand signals?

13. This seems like Dem Security Plan to me...! WTF is CNN talking about?
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 06:29 PM by FrenchieCat
And until we win some elections, I think it's as detailed as it needs to be. Hell, are Dems supposed to come up with the exact steps, detailed various possible outcomes and solutions for each, etc., etc., etc? Ain't that the job of those currently in charge?

The only plan the Republicans have is called "Stay the Course with Resolve"...and we already know that this plan stinks like shit....now don't we? Don't know why CNN ain't pointing that out?

WAR ON TERROR
To Defeat Terrorists and Stop the Spread of Weapons of Mass Destruction, we will:
Eliminate Osama Bin Laden, destroy terrorist networks like al Qaeda, finish the job in Afghanistan, and end the threat posed by the Taliban.

Double the size of our Special Forces, increase our human intelligence capabilities, and ensure our intelligence is free from political pressure.

Eliminate terrorist breeding grounds by combating the economic, social, and political conditions that allow extremism to thrive; lead international efforts to uphold and defend human rights; and renew longstanding alliances that have advanced our national security objectives.

Secure by 2010 loose nuclear materials that terrorists could use to build nuclear weapons or "dirty bombs."

Redouble efforts to stop nuclear weapons development in Iran and North Korea.

OR
IRAQ
To Honor the Sacrifice of Our Troops, we will:

Ensure 2006 is a year of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with the Iraqis assuming primary responsibility for securing and governing their country and with the responsible redeployment of U.S. forces.

Insist that Iraqis make the political compromises necessary to unite their country and defeat the insurgency; promote regional diplomacy; and strongly encourage our allies and other nations to play a constructive role.

Hold the Bush Administration accountable for its manipulated pre-war intelligence, poor planning and contracting abuses that have placed our troops at greater risk and wasted billions of taxpayer dollars.

OR
HOMELAND SECURITY
To Protect America from Terrorism and Natural Disasters, we will:

Immediately implement the recommendations of the independent, bipartisan 9/11 Commission including securing national borders, ports, airports and mass transit systems.

Screen 100 percent of containers and cargo bound for the U.S. in ships or airplanes at the point of origin and safeguard America's nuclear and chemical plants, and food and water supplies.

Prevent outsourcing of critical components of our national security infrastructure -- such as ports, airports and mass transit -- to foreign interests that put America at risk.

Provide firefighters, emergency medical workers, police officers, and other workers on the front lines with the training, staffing, equipment, and cutting edge technology they need.

Protect America from biological terrorism and pandemics, including the Avian flu, by investing in the public health infrastructure and training public health workers.http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/03/real_security_t.php

OR
IRAQ
To Honor the Sacrifice of Our Troops, we will:

Ensure 2006 is a year of significant transition to full Iraqi sovereignty, with the Iraqis assuming primary responsibility for securing and governing their country and with the responsible redeployment of U.S. forces.

OR

ENERGY INDEPENDENCE
To Free America from Dependence on Foreign Oil, we will:

Achieve energy independence for America by 2020 by eliminating reliance on oil from the Middle East and other unstable regions of the world.

Increase production of alternate fuels from America's heartland including bio-fuels, geothermal, clean coal, fuel cells, solar and wind; promote hybrid and flex fuel vehicle technology and manufacturing; enhance energy efficiency and conservation incentives.

OR
21st CENTURY MILITARY
To Ensure Unparalleled Military Strength and Honor our Troops, we will:

Rebuild a state-of-the-art military by making the needed investments in equipment and manpower so that we can project power to protect America wherever and whenever necessary.

Guarantee that our troops have the protective gear, equipment, and training they need and are never sent to war without accurate intelligence and a strategy for success.

Enact a GI Bill of Rights for the 21st Century that guarantees our troops -- active, reserve, and retired -- our veterans, and their families receive the pay, health care, mental health services, and other benefits they have earned and deserve.

Strengthen the National Guard, in partnership with the nation's Governors, to ensure it is fully manned, equipped and available to meet missions at home and abroad.http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/03/real_security_t.php
