Live from Chicago DFA...live on Saturday night with Al Franken.

Wednesday, March 29, 2006
Live from Chicago, it's Saturday Night!
William Maggos is an organizer of both Jo-Democracy (Joliet, IL) and Loop Supporters of Democracy for America (Chicago, IL).

This past Saturday about 400 progressives, including organizers from most of the local DFA groups in NE Illinois, met at a country and western bar downtown to hear and see Al Franken. Mr. Franken, a professional comedian, author, educator and host of his own show on Air America, was at his congenial best and he was really “on” for his remarks. His stories of visiting our troops in Iraq and their solid support for him were terrrific and inspiring. His jokes weren't too bad, either!

This part of the post is important because of those attending. And Franken verifed he was running.

In addition to a number of DFA organizers on the Host Committee, the ex officio co-hosts for the evening were Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Sen. Dick Durbin. Mr. Franken has said that he is interested in seeking the Democratic nomination in 2008 for the US Senate from his native Minnesota, the one that was formerly held by the late Sen. Paul Wellstone.

The event was a fundraiser for his Midwest Values PAC (MVP). In the meantime, Al said his PAC is going to focus on supporting progressive candidates in Minnesota and across the Midwest. Christine Cegelis, a candidate for Congress who has been endorsed by a number of DFA groups in Illinois, as well as DFA HQ, was also at the event. Democracy for America supporters were everywhere, including in Mr. Franken's remarks—he even sported a Democracy For Illinois pin for the evening!

And in the Democracy for America forum here at DU, Tom Rinaldo has posted a very nice post about his experience at Democracy for New York.

1. Isn't Franken DLC? Or at least DLC friendly?
I have no problem with that, but I thought he was.

2. He's Democrat friendly. Personally, his politics are a lot like
Wellstone's. Besides being a close friend of the late Paul and Shiela Wellstone, Franken is on the board of directors of Wellstone Action.

3. Note the attendees.
Just interesting.

Franken is a mixed bag. Hard to categorize.

4. Was there any interaction between Cegelis, Durbin and Schakowsky . . .
. . . I point this out to show how the divisions we have here on DU do not necessarily apply to the real world.

5. Gawd, I am so sick of the DNC vs DLC vs DCCC vs D-cup argument!!!
We need a DEMOCRATIC majority before we can even think about being selective on how liberal our nominees are !!!!

If you don't think AL FRANKEN is a D-E-M-O-C-R-A-T ... you seriously do not know Al Franken!!

MadFlorida, is he seriously running??

6. I agree with you, but I pointed it out because I'm sick and tired of it...
. . .being used to bash Democrats some DUers don't like and ignored when it concerns Democrats that DUers like. I'm not an anti-DLC DUer.

8. Ahh Windy ((( big hug !! )))

You're right ~ we all want DEMOCRATS to win!

And I don't understand why candidates like Casey in PA are winning bigtime over Pennacchio (and other races like that one)..

But I hope Democrats will support their eventual nominee in EVERY race across the nation!

I think the more we come together, the better we're going to do in the end.

I'll bet anything that the more of a Democratic majority we eventually have, the more selective we'll become on our nominee process. But we have to get there first!

:grouphug: ~ ~ :grouphug:

And Gabi: What is that thing? a jellyfish?

11. I'm not the one to ask. It's news to me too. Reread the OP...
Sure looks like it from what MF wrote.

13. Franken's exact quote...
"Mr. Franken has said that he is interested in seeking the Democratic nomination in 2008 for the US Senate "

Probably why he is forming the PAC. I am not sure if it says definitely he is running...but that he said he wanted to do so. Kind of confusing.

14. Tom, this paragraph so impressed me. Very pertinent.
This is a whole other response to multiple candidates in primaries...and it very much impressed me.

"The other story was about a new State DFA backed Party Chair, I think in Maryland, and how now there are many contested primaries in the Democratic Party with multiple people running. When confronted with this as a possible problem by someone else in the Party, this Party Chair responded to the effect: "I wish there were more Democratic candidates running. For every person who decides to get involved on that level they have circles of people who they touch and reach out to to get involved in politics, to pull them into the process. We need to expand participation in electoral politics, not stifle it. That's what happens when communities get energized behind candidates."

Now that is a really inclusive statement.

15. It impressed me too, MF. It's not an exact quote because...
It took me three hours to get home from the event by train and car, and I wrote it up this morning without notes, but it's real close in spirit to what he said, and that definately was the point he was making. I liked it.

16. Sounds like it was great.
That state chair you are talking about who was mentioned from MD must be Terry Lierman. He is very open to grassroots people. He does some of the training or speaking, not sure which at the DNC at times.
