ETHICAL TRAINING for our Troops...!
Edited on Thu Jun-01-06 01:52 PM by haab
Umm.. shouldn't this have been done before sending them into a war..

Do US troops lack ethics? If so, why?

I believe we won the hearts of the Iraqi people the day we overthrew Saddam, but our troops lack of ethics in the battlefield greatly contributed to them hating us. And I personally emphasis on our total ignorance of Iraqi cultural expectations....

But I still don't blame the troops.....

Iraq launches own probe of Haditha deaths

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military ordered American commanders to hold ethical training on battlefield conduct, and the Iraqi government Thursday announced its own investigation into reports that U.S. Marines killed unarmed civilians last year.

Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli, the commander of U.S.-led forces in Iraq, said the ethical training would emphasize "professional military values and the importance of disciplined, professional conduct in combat," as well as Iraqi cultural expectations.

"As military professionals, it is important that we take time to reflect on the values that separate us from our enemies," he said in a statement. "The challenge for us is to make sure the actions of a few do not tarnish the good work of the many."

The training will be conducted in units in the next 30 days and was aimed at reinforcing training service members received before coming to Iraq.

"Of the nearly 150,000 Coalition Forces presently in Iraq, 99.9 percent of them perform their jobs magnificently every day," Chiarelli said. Of those troops, about 130,000 are from the United States.

Above Lt. Gen. Peter Chiarelli said: "As military professionals, it is important that we take time to reflect on the values that separate us from our enemies," he said in a statement.

Let me name one of the values: TORTURE..... Despite all the beheading/bombings carried out by the insurgents, they have NEVER ONCE tortured anyone to death.

Ethical Training should start with Bush and Cheney...!!!! What we have here is a total failure of leadership. The troops lead by example and they have the worse bunch of misfits at the top...

1. Ethics usually begin in ones home...
The military also instructs on the rules of engagement.

3. If ethics truly does start in ones home
There's is absolutely nothing that can be done to improve the troops ethics.

2. Our ham fisted policy in Iraq only works if the intention is to
brutally steal their oil while they are being held down with a boot on their necks. All this bullshit talk of ethics amounts to a political move to smooth out/ defuse the Mei Lai thing that's coming out soon.

4. No Doubt...
they could (as well as we ourselves) use cultural awareness/sensitivity training (surely they get some?). As for Ethics Training, I'm a bit puzzled... seems to me they would already have as much ethical knowledge as most folks, and no doubt they've been given professional ethics as part of their training...

It would seem rather absurd to address things like "don't kill unarmed civilians" with "ethics" training. I can understand that under enough stress, ethical behavior may slip somewhat; nevertheless, such things can't be ignored. They're there to do a job in a professional manner and representing the United States, and as such they must be held to a high standard.

It couldn't hurt to put down a "reminder" of what's expected, including ethics, but they've made it sound like they think our troops are ignorant children who have no notion of the difference between right and wrong. I'd be rather insulted if I were in the military.

5. The military have pinpointed ethics of soldiers
as the main problem they're facing.

So ethical behavior "can" slip to the point of putting a bullet in the head of a child..!!

The problem goes well beyond ethics alone.....

How many Haditha's have happened in the past 3 years.... Would anyone dare to guess??

6. If someone doesn't have the basic, inborn instinct,
NOT to blow the head off a child, he (or she) has no business in society, let alone the military.

7. I asked my veteran husband about this...
I asked, "Honey, did you need ethics training to know not to kill innocent women and children should you go to war?"

He guffawed and said, "Uh... no," and then went on to explain that even during a time of peace (he served under Clinton and my beloved Clark) that they were TAUGHT the Geneva Convention and what it actually means. They also didn't have deviants leading them (and, to be honest, they DID have deviants in the rank and file because there were a goodly number of recruits who joined to avoid jail, but it wasn't the vast majority of anything).

Ethics is something your family and society should have taught you long before you get to be 18 years old, but, with this bunch of "macho" hoo-haws leading our forces, what can you expect? All the good and decent generals have retired or are retiring because they can no longer stand the political pressure this administration puts on them.
