Members of the Alaska Republican Party gathered in front of the Anchorage Hilton to protest against Howard Dean and the Democrats' "Fifty-State Strategy" on Wednesday evening in downtown Anchorage.

http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/7789134p-7702378c.html

Dean, the former presidential candidate and current head of the National Democratic Committee, says his party has a chance to win back the governor's mansion this year. He arrived in Anchorage on Wednesday for a $100-a-plate dinner at the Hilton Anchorage to raise money for Alaska Democrats, prompting Republicans to stage an "open ANWR" rally outside.

In a phone interview last week, Dean said Murkowski was vulnerable to a Democratic challenger and accused Republicans of practicing a "culture of corruption." He listed Alaska examples, including the resignation of former Attorney General Gregg Renkes, who quit amid reports that he used his state job to promote a coal technology company that he owned stock in.

Alaska Republicans took Dean's visit as a chance to paint Democrats as out of sync with average Alaskans. Nationally, Democratic leaders have worked to block oil exploration in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and are traditionally soft on gun rights, said state Republican chairman Randy Ruedrich. But at the banquet, one of the first things Dean talked about were his eight consecutive endorsements from the National Rifle Association.

Republicans had organized a rally before the banquet. Ruedrich expected maybe 15 to 20 Republicans to show. More would be coming if it weren't for the rain, he said.

2. I wondered that as well.
Maybe they just wanted to get out the word that they wanted to drill in ANWR. They protest him nearly everywhere he goes. Just habit, I guess.

20. That's really funny
considering that we Alaska peaceniks were out protesting several times during the winter in strong winds and temperatures in the teens. What a bunch of wusses these Republicans are.

21. I wanted to go really bad
but couldn't afford the $100 a plate dinner. Too bad that Dean et al. don't have gatherings for the peasants when they come to town - especially in places like Alaska where we hardly ever get nationally known Democrats visiting. Oh, well, I'm glad there was a good turn-out.

23. He used to have those kind of rallies.
There would be several levels of fundraisers. When he first became chair he did that. There would be student rallies for $35 or something, or even less. I understand the pressure for big money now, and 06 elections in November. But it's a shame there is not room for that, especially in places like Alaska.

Hey, think about this. Bill Clinton is coming to Orlando for a party fundraiser....$200 a clip. We aren't going anyway, but that is very high.

24. It's sad that money's such a big part
of the whole election cycle. My assumption is that the reason Hillary keeps being touted as the "frontrunner" is because she's got all the big bucks behind her. But they seem to forget that it's all us LITTLE people that cast the votes.

26. I agree that it is unfortunate that the base asking price is $100.
However, when you think about it, the overhead cost of having Howard Dean come to an organized dinner in Alaska is really pretty high. He could be in Los Angeles and raise 5-10 times as much as he would going to Alaska. It's unfortunate, but things aren't cheap anymore...the party fundraising take on an event like that can't be more than 50-60%, if even that. There are three resources in political campaigning: money, time and people. Dean does a better job of balancing his commitment to each, like many other noble leaders of ours: John Conyers, Barbara Boxer, Bill Clinton (despite it all), Jimmy Carter etc. I have faith in the man.

12. Why are they so anxious to drill in ANWR?
Why not just require that the oil currently being pumped out of their state be sold on the American market? Wouldn't we edge closer to energy independence if we didn't let the oil companies peddle our oil to the Asian market, simply because they can get more money there? We're supposed to be at war, you know. Exxon seems to be doing okay with their billions in quarterly profits; can't they pitch in a little, too?

25. Very good statement. ANWR is not Republican property.
:hi:

It may be in Alaska, but it belongs to all of us. Every national reserve belongs to all of us. And when we destroy one area, like the Gulf of Mexico with its growing "dead zones", we destroy what belongs to the whole country.

17. The guy who organized the protest is EMBARRASSED per the media!

If you look at the photo.. the old dude in the blue shirt and dark coat, Randy Ruedrich is head of the Alaska GOP and is a total loser.

He's lying through his teeth about "rain". We had intermittent sprinkles on Wednesday and while it was overcast.. there was no rain! He's being made a total fool today by local media who are laughing their asses off at his pathetic turnout.

I can't wait to see what the "Alaska Ear" (the gossip section of the Anchorage Daily News that is written by a major leftie) is going to say about this! Trust me.. they'll have something in there this Sunday!

Remember when she used to report all the crime stories? They read like detective novels. We're going out for 7-10 days camping leaving tomorrow, but I'll have to check her out when we get back. I find this pathetic "demonstration" really hilarious.

28. From Alaska to the Virgin Islands in just a week.
All said rather jokingly, but can you just imagine the jet lag?

http://hotlineblog.nationaljournal.com/archives/2006/06/a_dream_travel.html

"A Dream Travel Week?
No wonder Howard Dean wanted to be DNC chair so he could have weeks like this.

-- On Friday, he addresses the very important Virgin Island Dem Cmte in St. Thomas.

-- On Saturday, he's in Vegas for YearlyKos.

In fairness to Dean, assuming he doesn't get to St. Thomas until Thursday evening, that's one tricky flight schedule he's putting together. It's a good thing he picks up 4 hours by traveling from the Atlantic Time Zone to the Pacific Time Zone. "
