Immigration Wedge Fraud..
.... Listening to NPR this morning has my blood boiling. Putting cameras on the border, sending National Guard troops to the border, building a fence on the border - it's all a fraudulent bunch of bullshit designed to fool stupid Americans.

Want to put a crimp in illegal immigration? Fine and imprison the asses who break the law and hire them. It would cost 1/10th of what these other "all show no go" measures would cost and it would work.

But guess what, politicians, both Dems and Reps, aren't the least bit interested in stemming illegal immigration, they are just fishing for talking points for the next race.

3. Do you have a fence around your back yard?
Does you employer have a fence around the warehouse?

AGREED THAT EMPLOYERS SHOULD BE SEVERELY PUNISHED (jail time would get their attention), but FENCES DO HELP.

5. How will a partial fence keep anyone out?
And how can a fence be built in the middle of the Rio Grande?

When will the first "illegal employer" go to jail?

6. Fences are great things ...
We could hang all kinds of nice banners on the fence. Imagine a 300 mile long fence adorned with Toyota and Coke ads. Spectacular!

7. Establishing a line for the fence is not THAT hard
Come on, you are presenting a false objection. The very effective portions of the fences already built along the border are not in the water. Jeez.

9. Will all the property owners along the Border agree to the fence?
Or will the Feds sieze their land? How will a fence be built through the Big Bend?

An incomplete fence will be as effective as a condom with holes.

10. The fence need not be contiguous. Where natural terrain
is a problem, there are other means to detect border violations. But fence would take care of most of the border.

In addition, checkpoints along the border for road & railway will have to be beefed up.

This isn't rocket science.

4. true, true, but I wonder how many people are fooled now
There's been 5 amnesties (including the 1986 one) with promises of enforcement which never happens.

In 1986, the IRCA act made it illegal to hire illegal aliens. In 1993, over 2000 employers were fined. In 2000, over 300 employers were fined. In 2004, only 3 were fined. In 2005, 0 were fined.

But the House did pass the bill HR 4437, which does have some good provisions, even though the media focusses only on border patrol and not interior enforcement.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HR_4437
Mandates employers to verify workers' legal status through electronic means, phased in over several years.

There's something called the "Basic Pilot program", which was created in 1996 to allow for this electronic verification. The joke is that it has always been a voluntary system. It should be mandatory, and HR 4437 would make it mandatory.

http://www.cis.org/articles/2006/jmvtestimony022106.html

This program enables employers to electronically verify the work eligibility of newly hired non-citizens directly with the appropriate federal agencies using the Internet, and is considered one of the most promising and effective tools available to encourage compliance with immigration laws. Employers now using the web-based program report that it is easier to use than the current paperwork-reliant system, and brings virtually no disruption to employers and legal workers.
...
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an important enforcement bill, H.R. 4437, known as the Sensenbrenner bill which, among other things, would gradually require all employers nationwide to use the Basic Pilot Program to verify that their workers are eligible for employment.
...
Three pilot programs were introduced in 1997 and the most successful, known as Basic Pilot, was reauthorized and expanded by Congress in 2004. An independent evaluation carried out by Temple University's Institute for Survey Research and the private research firm Westat found that Basic Pilot did reduce unauthorized employment among participating employers (the program is currently voluntary).

8. What always amazes me ..
.. is that when I apply for a job the employer will research everything I have done to infinity .. like what this about an OUI from 1978 and the like, but then they can honestly say, we aren't sure if THESE employees are citizens? Hmm .. Must be something in the water.

11. Right
The last thing most in the Senate really want to do is eliminate Corporate America's supply of cheap illegal immigrant labor. And they certainly don't want to ever actually prosecute an employer for illegal hiring. That's what the real concern is regarding "what to do with those already here." The real fear is "what to do with employers of all of those who are already here." That's why the exploiters like the Chamber of Commerce are so strongly in favor of this bill. They're afraid their own members might be prosecuted for breaking the law.

The problem would vanish if we started prosecuting employers. But so would their cheap labor. And that's what they're really concerned with -- the wellbeing of the poor employers that might be prosecuted.
