Gore Says He Doesn't Plan to Run in 2008
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 12:34 PM by newyawker99
'I Have No Plans to Be a Candidate for President Again,' He Says

WASHINGTON (June 4) - Al Gore, the Democrats' nominee for the White House in 2000, says he has all but ruled out running for president in 2008, saying the best use of his time is to educate people about global warming.

"I haven't made a Sherman statement, but that's not an effort to hold the door open. It's more the internal shifting of gears," said Gore, referring to Civil War-era general William Tecumseh Sherman. "I can't imagine any circumstances in which I would become a candidate again. I've found other ways to serve. I'm enjoying them."

Gore referred to Sherman's famous words upon retiring from the Army in 1884, which put to rest talk of a presidential run: "If nominated I will not run; if elected I will not serve."

Gore, in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC's "This Week," stopped short of issuing such an equivocal statement. But he said his time is best spent educating people on heat-trapping gases raising the Earth's surface temperature. He's promoting "An Inconvenient Truth," a film that chronicles his intricate slide shows on global warming.

Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., who is planning a run in 2008, said the Tennessean would be a strong candidate if he decided to enter the race.

"He would be viable, and he would be welcome," Biden said on "Meet the Press" on NBC. "It would add to the debate in this party to have him."

1. F.Y.I. in this same interview Gore was asked point blank to rule out 2008
Gore was asked, point blank, if a 2008 run was off the table, and Gore refused to say "Yes, 2008 is off the table".

In the past, when he has decided not to run for a specific office, he has not hesitated to answer in specifics - - "No, I will not run for President in 1992", for example.

3. Good, he hasn't changed much and his time is past!
I voted for him in the 2000 general election just because he was the Dem candidate. I would not vote for him in a primary this time. He really doesn't offer that much of a change. He is still Al Gore- Conservative Dem.
He is doing a good job on Global warming, he needs to stick with that.

4. Jeez, you are on a mission today.
We get it. You support Kerry. Whatever.

Your assessment of Gore is flat-out wrong and, more curious, unfair.

You must be insecure in your support of Kerry to launch this smear campaign against Gore.

5. I think Al knows how important a "Recruit Gore" campaign will be
It's worth at least a little free MSM coverage sometime in 2007.
