Am I the only one really skeptical about the 'terror plot' in Canada?
Been away a couple days so I may have missed it if this has been here before but.....
It just seems so convenient that a Bushie buddy is in charge of Canada AND Bush's numbers going south AND Harper wants to push Canada into joining his buddy in Bush's Wars.
I just am very skeptical any more about anything a Bush or a Bush-wannabe says or does.
Tell me I am nuts, please.

6. I haven't had time to read up on all the details
On the radio about all we can get for 'news' is Fux, CNN and NPR which is no prize anymore. So all I've heard is the barest details. And the barest details make it sound like one of our 'AlQuieda #3 arrested " deals.

10. Maybe. Maybe not.
It could be that the right wingnut up in Canada is already playing kissipoo with the Bush administration. Or it could be that it was legitimate. Look at Spain. They found a whole slew of terrorists there just waiting patiently to do the next attack on Spain.

12. I'm not skeptical at all
I also believe the twin towers fell because two airplanes crashed into them, a plane hit the pentagon, there are no US paid "death squads" causing havoc in Iraq.

Everyone here is entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. I just feel like a minority sometimes because I don't think think there are these huge far-reaching conspiracies going on in the world. And in CANADA? Nope, don't think so.

29. That's not what I meant at all...
Whenever there is a particularly gruesome or despicable act carried out by insurgents in Iraq against innocent civilians, many posters just can't believe that the acts were actually carried out by muslims.

Examples: The tennis coach and team members being killed for wearing shorts, the bombings of marketplaces, the bombing of q famous Shiite mosque, the huge riots over Danish Cartoons. I've seen conspiracy theorists claim each time that the United States is directly behind each.

It's just not true, they are very weak and easily debunked conspiracy theories. Some people just refuse to accept that there are people out there more evil and despicable than our current administration. If you ask me, I think a political blog should focus on reality.

Besides which, given the reaction of Christians to "The Da Vinci Code", including the price on Dan Brown's head, I forget, something like 20 grand to kill him, I really don't see Christians as being that different than Muslims in this regard.

32. Now you're just being silly
You have over 6000 posts, you've obviously been around DU for a while, just like myself (I'm a slow poster) You really claim that you need me to "point" you to the posts I was referring to?? Come on now, that's borderline BS. I see them everyday, and so do you. Just go look at the posts referring to the Canadian arrests. After that, look at the posts relating to the tennis coach if they're still up. TONS of posters refuse to believe that, yes, there are in fact muslim extremists out there who want to kill and maim for BS reasons.

THEN, you start comparing Muslims and Christians, which came out of nowhere! And not only was the argument out of nowhere, it was very very WEAK.
Yes, I did read about that 20 grand to kill Dan Brown, by ONE no-name guy in India who nobody listened to.

If you really want to get into it, yes, Christianity and Islam are very similar, if you use Middle Ages Christianity which is unfortunately where Islam is right now. Islam is a wonderful religion that has been hijacked by fundamentalists who have turned it into a very troubled faith. There is no comparison between the two at this time, IMO.

If a movie comparable to Da Vinci was written about Mohamed, the death toll from riots would be in the thousands.

35. What? A movie about Mohammed that involved him having a...
family? What's controversial about that? The only problem is the whole "no graven images" thing that Christians seem to forget about in the Bible. As far as other posters on DU, first, most here on this thread do see this as political, just like everything else in life. Personally, I won't condemn those accused simply because a government says so, its best to leave it up to the courts to work out. Also, many are skeptical of some of the bombings in Iraq, especially car bombings, after those British soldiers were caught setting one, I wonder what happened to them anyways?

A couple of things to keep in mind, first, Iraq has at least 3 factions that are fighting the US in Iraq, these are the foriegn terrorists, mostly radicals, and a small minority, homegrown rebels, who usually focus their violence on US personell only and people they view as accomodators to the occupation, and then the civil war fighters, both sides, who are using the current chaos to acheive their own ends.

Now, as far as my comparison between Christianity and Islam, I stand by that statement, the reason is actually quite simple, both religions have been hijacked by fundlementalists, the only difference between them is that the Christians are in control of the most powerful nation on Earth, whereas the Muslims are, if anything, mostly kicked out of the nations where they came from. Look at how Al Queda developed, mostly foriegn fighters who went to Afganistan to fight the Soviets, after they won that war, they then embroiled in a civil war, many left, and were then imprisoned or expelled from the nations they came from, with few exceptions, and this disenfranchisement, of sorts, lead to violence, and people are surprised at that?

36. *Sigh*
"...the only difference between them is that the Christians are in control of the most powerful nation on Earth, whereas the Muslims are, if anything, mostly kicked out of the nations where they came from."

First of all, the statement that all Muslims have been kicked out of their nations is pretty much wrong. Last time I checked, Islam started in the Middle East. All nations in the ME with the exception of Israel are Muslim, many ruled with strong if not complete religious influence. The only Muslims who have been "kicked out" are Palestinians. Everywhere else, like North Africa and Southeast Asia, and even Europe, Muslims have been moving in or converting in huge numbers.

Your account of the Afghanistan conflict is downright confusing. It's just a long, wandering, run-on sentence that doesn't make much sense to me.

Finally, comparing Islamic Fundamentalists to Christian is way too far of a stretch. Christian fundies are indeed a problem in the US because of their blind support of the Republican Party, but other than the occasional abortion bombing, they almost never resort to violence or rioting. Islamic fundamentalists on the other hand, are seriously dangerous individuals who oppress and mutilate women, kill indiscriminately based on religion, etc. etc. I just don't see the comparison. It's like comparing my little league career to Babe Ruth's.

You'll have to excuse me saying so, but I don't think your understanding of world events and history is correct. Think what you wish though, I'm done.

that were kicked out of or were imprisoned in their respective nations. During the late 1970s to the early 1980s, they tried to foster an "Islamic Revolution" throughout their own nations. This usually involved killing moderate Muslims or Democratic Reformers in their own nations. However, this didn't really endear them with the rest of the population. So when the call to war in Afganistan came, many of them went, and many of them stayed there to help create their "Paradise on Earth" through the Taliban, after they won the civil war.

As far as the Fundies here, let's see, we did have that couple who wanted to set off that cynanide bomb in a stadium, good thing they were caught. If they succeeded, they could have killed 10 times more people than died on 9/11. But the point is, in this country, with few exceptions, the Fundies have, by and large, restricted violent actions to a few isolated incidents. However, that could easily change if they feel that they no longer have influence on elections here, if they became irrelevent entirely, then I could see them increasing their violent actions.

41. Cuban people have a saying.....
"Crea fama y acuestate a dormir" (which translates as, "If you gather fame, you may as well retire to bed"), meaning: "Once you have a bad reputation, it's hell to get rid of it."

That's how I see this administration. Its lies and evil deeds are so constant and continuous, that it's become really hard to believe it's not responsible for every evil act in its vicinity.

18. Australia too
It's been a similar scenario in Australia. Sure, they're shaking some nuts out of the trees, but the climate is also, arguably, sending some up the trees who wouldn't otherwise find it an attractive roost, and new zealotry on the part of the police and intelligence forces is catching some pretty harmless acorns and putting them through hell for nothing.

30. Still, It's Canada
It seems to me that a lot of countries are finding real terrorists and real plots whereas we for some reason are locking up people on the flimsiest of evidence and no identified plot.

I think it speaks more to the fact that this country is more concerned with appearing to be doing something as opposed to really doing something. There are, for certain, terrorist cells here. Why is it that this country can't find the ones here and other countries can find theirs?

the timing of the arrests are interesting. Our Supreme Court is going to begin hearings into the constitutionality of security certificates, which allow the authorities to indefinitely detain, without charge, anyone considered a threat to national security.

Also, CSIS has very recently been ratcheting up the fear level, wanting more money and power.

I am waiting to see what actual facts come out as opposed to hearing only the government agencies involved.

Edited for clarity.

42. I congratulate you
on showing the skepticism that most governments deserve in this day and age. The days of showing politicians respect and believing what they say are well and truly gone. My sniveling, lying, brown-nosing worm of a prime minister had his little terrorist raids about 6 months ago. Nothing has been proven yet. They just need to do something to justify their actions of the past. Question everything your government says and does. Also, its a bit scary now that he has a new buddy to the north.
