I Don't Know Which Mark Warner Some of You Have Been Watching
But I watched the entire speech on C-Span and thought he was damned good.

I have been critical of his speaking skills in the past, and he still trips up occasionally and started out slow, but he then quickly gathered speed.

His speech was inspiring and forceful and when he hit the line "But that would require an administration that believes in science", the entire crowd was on its feet roaring. He outlined very powerfully what this administration has done wrong, but focused far more on what he believes are the errors of omission in this disastrous White House. He castigated Bush for never asking Americans to participate in a new energy policy, on crafting innovative reforms for education, on our collective response to 9/11.

He actually had a theme to his speech; it was not just a litany of policy positions, but it was a coherent belief system; he has unwavering faith that Americans will step up to the plate when asked, and that as Democrats we must ASK the American people to start taking responsibility and get involved if we wish to take our country back, regain competitiveness, set our financial house in order, insure the health of our citizenry and get out of this disaster in Iraq.

I suspect that some of you are predisposed not to like the guy because you think he's a spawn of the big, bad DLC. Which results in many threads bashing this good man.

What a shame that in so doing you are missing really listening to what he has to say. Because what he has to say is at times both profound and inspiring.

And very, very optimistic.

2. I watched his speech today, also
I wasn't doing back flips over him. But I found myself wanting to see him in debates with other Dems. And I think he could hold his own debating with Reflubs, too.

I learned about his past, the business failures and the success. I want to know more about how they turned Virginia schools around. A nice answer to the No Child Left Behind nonsense.

I came away thinking that the Dem Party has depth and variety. That we have people who can articulate their ideas and feel proud of what they accomplished in life. And that's good for at least one back flip, IMO.

3. Didn't see it but glad to hear your opinion....I'm not afraid of the DLC
and would have No problem with Warner, Bayh, Biden or Richardson-though I'd prefer Clark, Edwards or Feingold.

Basically, as a Democrat, I like most all of our candidates. Glad Warner impressed you.

5. I thought both he and Feingold were impressive
in different ways.

Feingold has strength and conviction and comes across as someone who has no fear of expressing his beliefs.

Warner came across as impassioned and very forward looking and optimistic. I could actually see him inspiring young people.

A ticket with the two of them would be fine by me.

4. well, a Virginian would make sense...
after all, we had a Virginian after we got rid of the first King George, and that worked out pretty well, so maybe what we need is another Virginian to fix the mess this King George has made. :woohoo:

Though, being from Virginia, I'm probably just a wee bit biased. :smoke:

8. Virginia aka The "Mother" of Presidents
Washington
Jefferson
Madison
Monroe
Wilson
Tyler
Taylor
Harrison

Can we add Warner to that list?
I'm a Virginian (born in Wisconsin)
I'd like to see
Feingold/Warner in 08

7. Simple: pre-election groupthink
The same retarded thing happened last primary season, and happens every day on other issues.

11. I've questioned his oratory skills in the past but if you suggest more
consideration is owed, I will give it.

I've read enough of your posts by now, ruggerson, to know your political instincts are super.

I will give Warner all my ears next time he's on C-Span or another venue.

14. It is all going to depend on who he is debating...
He is not the best speaker in the world - Would not look good standing next to Edwards or Kerry, may look good debating Clark and possible Hillary...To me he can effectively compete against the Bidens of the world...I hope he is in the race, I wish him well, I wish all the good guys well.

17. His stump speaking style is pretty good...however..
In an interview format is isn't as good. The points he makes are intelligent, often very indighful. It's not the content it's the delivery. He is aften halting, stops mid sentence to resstart etc.

18. Damn -- I missed it.
Mark Warner was my governor and an excellent one at that. He's great on domestic issues, but lacking in foreign policy expertise (his Iraq position is atrocious, but this is due to his inexperience). To be honest, I wish now that he had challenged George Allen in '06. However, I would consider him a great VP -- that way he could get experience and later on become president. That's as far as I'll go with him right now because of Iraq.

19. I predict he'll get the Democratic Nomination
He's the kind of guy who can win the WH and usually does win, ie. former Governor from a Southern State that appeals to independents as well as his base.

20. I had not previously thought that Warner was a great speaker but
after seeing him on CSPAN last night I was very impresed. He was excellent and if he continues to present himself this well, and with his success as a southern Governor, he could easily be the Democratric nominee. He may also be the Dem with the best chance to win the general election.
