Can an illegal immigrant register to vote?
RWnuts love to argue that they can.

Could they conceivably use a fake SS#?
How does this work?

1. Posting for later checking
I think you probably could if you had a fake Soc.Sec. card # but my Spidey sense tells me that that is a bit of a risk to take- in getting caught- and assuming that THEY wouldn't do the same (with non existent people) is very naive.

If you haven't read RFK Jr.'s election article yet then you should and you would know that nothing (they bank on the benefit of the doubt) is beyond them.

2. Hmm ...
Might be different place to place.
I just fill out some info on a card and sign it. Noone asks to see anything but I have no idea what goes on after I hand over the card. Do they check to see if the info is bogus? I dont know.

3. Why would they?
They would be taking a risk of getting caught and being deported.

I don't think that very many illegal immigrants care enough about adding their vote to our political process to take that risk.

No, this is just another stupid red herring by the right wing. Unfortunately, many are falling for it, I think.

4. It is a curious question though ...
as to how the system really works.
I mean whats to stop me from driving down to some other state and walking into the city hall and picking up a registration card and filling it in with stuff like my name is elmer c. fudd and so forth ... would I then be able to vote come elction day or would those sleepy looking clerks actually look into it?

7. During the 2004 election, there were several threads about relocating
to other states, where our votes were needed, and establishing residency, just long enough to be qualified to vote there. I imagine that the length of residency varies by state, but it can't be very long, if people were considering it.

9. I don't remember if anyone here actually did this,
but do remember that it was a matter of residing there just long enough to be qualified to vote. So, obviously, you at least have to show proof of residency to register in another state. And, of course, being able to prove who you are and that you're registered. Remember the "election protection cards?":-(

As for people who are in this country illegally, it makes little sense that they'd take a chance on revealing their status by attempting to register to vote, after all the chances that they took just to get here.

5. They could, if they do have a false SS#...
but most illegals have a great fear of detection, and sometimes won't even seek medical attention when they need it just to avoid it, so why would they risk registering to vote? It doesn't make sense -- at least, to me.

I think it's interesting to note that the only group of immigrants guaranteed entrance to this country are the Cubans... any of them that touch American soil are guaranteed asylum. They vote overwhelmingly Republican. I don't see the Republicans wanting to change their immigration policy toward Cubans, do you?
