Bob Graham named campaign chairman for Jim Davis' run for FL governor
Bob Graham to chair Jim Davis' Florida gubernatorial campaign

06.02.2006

TAMPA –Candidate for governor and Democratic frontrunner Jim Davis today named former Florida Governor and US Senator Bob Graham Chairman of his campaign. Graham, among Florida's most influential Democratic leaders, was the first former statewide elected official to endorse Davis's campaign for governor, saying, "I have taken the measure of the man, and he is ready for the job."

Since then, Graham has campaigned across Florida and raised money on behalf of Davis's campaign. As Chairman, Graham will provide strategic advice as a leader who knows what it takes to win statewide elections in Florida and knows what it takes to represent the interests of working families.

snip

Davis thanked Graham for taking a high-profile role in his campaign for governor and vowed to take his style of leadership back to the state capital.

"I am proud to have the support of a leader like Bob Graham, who has dedicated his career to public service and to Keeping Florida's Promise to our children, seniors and families," said Davis. "He and I agree that the best ideas and solutions come from Florida's people, not politicians.

Also mentioned in these links:

Florida Today

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Davis leading his Democratic challenger, state Sen. Rod Smith, 38 to 17 percent, and Republicans State Attorney General Charlie Crist and state Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, 40 to 37 percent. About 20 percent of voters remain undecided.

Miami Herald

The best day in Jim Davis' campaign for governor must have been the one when Bob Graham, the former governor, U.S senator, presidential candidate and author, said he would bestow his endorsement.

Sort of a professor emeritus for Florida Democrats, Graham's is the top individual endorsement for a statewide Democratic candidate.

9. I won't criticize Rod
I prefer Jim Davis -- based on personal experience, I know he listens to and cares about his constituents and I believe Davis has a slightly better chance at beating Crist. But, I won't attack Smith. Whoever wins the primary needs all the support they can get.

6. Jim is not a good guy...
Davis has a terrible DLC record in Congress...no friend to workers...co sponsored the bankruptcy bill, a bad bill for those will medical $$ issues, and he is attacking an opponent..as he has no good news to report, endorsements, etc...leaving us vunerable in November to be used against us. We expect this from Swiftboat Vets, and repugs...not dems. Davis would not go into Conyers hearings on election fraud..to even LOOK at the evidence. He has been in a safe seat drawn for him by repugs. He votes with Bush...when he votes. He has a terrible record in congress. why would you want him to lead our state? Rod has worked in our state, knows the programs...he put many in place! He also knows where in the loop legislation lies...and who is working on what. Jim will have a two year learning curve...we cannot afford. He is out of touch with people here...he has been in DC. He is a repub lite candidate...who will lose the north fla area..where we alwasy lose. Rod wins up there...where we always lose. Rod got the firefighters statewide..so Jim went and attacked Jeb Bush! Idle hands....get into trouble...read below what was in Jim's home paper! The tide is turning.
I'm a Rod fan too. He IS the REAL DEAL.

St. Pete Times...
*****************************
DAVIS VS. BUSH: Democratic gubernatorial candidate and U.S. Rep. Davis last
week called on Gov. Jeb Bush to seek the resignation of his chief health
care regulator, Alan Levine, after a report that Levine was in line for a
high-paying job managing a group of South Florida hospitals.

"As governor, I will clean up Tallahassee and keep our promise to Florida's
families by making sure that the leaders in my administration put their own
financial interests aside and the interests of Floridians front and center,"
Davis said in a statement.

But Bush, appearing at a hurricane bill signing ceremony, scoffed at Davis'
shot and signaled a line of attack Republicans intend to use on Davis: His
missing congressional votes while campaigning for governor.

"This is the guy, Congressman Davis from Tampa? The guy who is 10 out of 435
congressmen in terms of absentee, not being on the job, not voting, 10th
worst in the Congress?" the governor said. "He's telling me to tell someone
in my agency that works 24-7 on behalf of the people of the state that he
should resign? No way."

Davis may have listened. On Saturday, Davis thanked the Greater Naples
Chamber of Commerce for rescheduling a debate planned for Tuesday so he can
be in Washington to vote on Homeland Security funding.

Up until now, I didn't know much about Jim Davis's record. Sounds like it mostly sucks.

Rod Smith is from Alachua County. He was a good State Attorney General and I'm sure he will make a fine governor.

12. A few items to address here:
Edited on Mon Jun-05-06 04:08 PM by seafan
From the post:

....He has a terrible record in congress. why would you want him to lead our state? Rod has worked in our state, knows the programs...he put many in place! He also knows where in the loop legislation lies...and who is working on what. Jim will have a two year learning curve...we cannot afford. He is out of touch with people here...he has been in DC.

Representative Davis served in the Florida Legislature for 8 years, from 1988-1996, and additionally served as House Majority Leader. So, undergoing a "learning curve" and being hopelessly "out of touch" are not a description of Rep. Davis' skills when it comes to serving in Florida government.

...He is a repub lite candidate...who will lose the north fla area..where we alwasy lose. Rod wins up there...where we always lose.

...Rod got the firefighters statewide..so Jim went and attacked Jeb Bush! Idle hands....get into trouble...read below what was in Jim's home paper! The tide is turning.

The piece cited is actually from a blog at the St. Pete Times web site. In this blog post is the incendiary barb by Jeb Bush, aimed at Rep Davis.

Here is the comment by Jeb Bush:

"This is the guy, Congressman Davis from Tampa? The guy who is 10 out of 435 Congressman in terms of absentee, not being on the job, not voting, 10th worst in the Congress? He's telling me to tell someone in my agency that works 24/7 on behalf of the people of the state that he should resign? No way. This is the guy who didn't vote for the reauthorization of the Patriot Act because he had to come down here and do a political stop."

Bush scoffed at Davis' statement as "purely political. He's on very thin ice as a politician that was elected to serve in Washington and misses vote after vote and vote so he can pursue his personal ambitions."

To omit the context of this comment in the post is misleading in a big way.

Here is the context:

TAMPA – Democratic candidate for governor and Democratic front runner Jim Davis today called on Governor Jeb Bush to ask for the resignation of Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Alan Levine, based on published reports that Levine has applied to be CEO of the North Broward Hospital District. Calling it inappropriate for the senior Bush aide to interview for a half-million dollar a year job at an organization he's supposed to regulate, Davis said Bush should fire Levine if he refuses to step down:

"It's understandable that Levine would be interested in his own financial well-being, but the person who holds this office should have the health of Floridians as their only concern. It's the governor's responsibility to make sure he has someone who is looking out for Florida's patients, while his senior health care aide is out looking for a bigger paycheck."

"As governor, I will clean up Tallahassee and keep our promise to Florida's families by making sure that the leaders in my administration put their own financial interests aside and the interests of Floridians front and center."

So, this controversial Bush aide Alan Levine, who now doles out billions in Medicaid money and who has been the chief architect of Bush's Medicaid *revamp*, wants the job of President and CEO of the North Broward Hospital District, which, just coincidentally, just happens to be one of the two areas of the state that Bush's Medicaid revamping will start next month... (the other is Duval...Jacksonville)

And, guess what, the entire hospital board of seven commissioners who will decide on the candidate to fill this position just happens to be appointed by Jeb Bush.

And Jim Davis objects to this display of conflict of interest and cronyism.

So, instead of Jeb addressing Davis' concerns about accountability to the people of Florida, Jeb lobs a verbal barb against Davis to create smoke. People are figuring out that Jeb Bush is going to try to destroy anything and everyone he sees as the enemy.

Gathering the facts on these guys is a full time job. And facts are what we need to fight them.

Freedom to support a candidate is everyone's right. But to make sweeping statements without factual backup is useless.

20. So, ya work for the Davis Campaign do ya?
I'm very disappointed in Bob Graham. Davis is a Democrat like Joe Lieberman is a Democrat. His record stinks to high heaven. Last year, after a local event featuring Howard Dean as the main speaker I accosted Davis on the Bankruptcy Bill. He had the gall to stand in front of a small gathering and tell me: "Obviously, you don't know anything about the bill. I co-sponsored it and it was time to do so because the financianl institutions are getting taken to the cleaners by deadbeats."

As it happened I HAD read the bill or I wouldn't have said anything to him in the first place. He acted like a pure asshole with his answer and if you can honestly tell me that any real Democrat could vote for that bill, let alone co-sponsoring it, then I'd have to accuse YOU of not reading it. Wanna guess who one of Davis's big contributors was? The money lenders!

And another thing, we had Davis scheduled to debate Smith here in Naples, Florida tonight. He cancelled out at the last minute because he had "pressing business in Washington". Odd, don't you think that missing votes never seemed to bother him before. I think the truth is that he is tired of having his ass handed to him every time he has to appear on the same stage with Smith. He can't talk, he can't make sense and Charlie Crist (The Republican who will most likely be their candidate) will hand him his ass too.

Davis's voting record proves that he does not deserve the governorship of Florida. Hell, he doesn't deserve the votes of his district to be their Congressional Representative either.

I'll finish by saying that I really don't have a dog in this fight. I want only what is best for Florida and the Democratic Party and Davis is is not the answer for either of those.

Finding out the facts about candidates takes a lot of time and investigation. First you hear them talk and then you do your research to see if they are being straight with you. If not.....if they claim to be a Democrat and vote like a Republican then its time to toss them overboard. To co-sponsor the bankruptcy bill was one of the most egregious acts any Democratic legislator has ever done. My candidate will be the one that represents my views and upholds the core values of the Democratic Party. Davis is done. There can be no defense of his voting record....or lack thereof.

Go ahead, defend his sponsorship of the bankruptcy bill. I'll be interested to hear your response. I've invited many Davis fans to come on the show and defend his vote on that one. No takers yet. I wonder why? Its the ole' "can't defend the indefensible" problem isn't it?

7. Davis and the bankruptcy bill....signed a letter begging for a vote on it.
Read this:
http://www.tnr.com/etc.mhtml?pid=2584

So he could vote for it. His office refused to respond to my queries, though his aide spent half an hour on the phone with me. His aide had no clue what was in that bill, and was utterly stunned when I read parts of it to him.

I never heard back, Davis supported it fully.

He stood before the DFA in a candidate forum, said he did not agree with most of what Dean said....but then he refused to say what parts he did not agree with.

He is rated 30% approval by NARAL while his campaign manager, Bob Graham was rated 100% by NARAL.

That said, I guess we will vote for him if he is in the general election. We prefer Rod Smith. Maybe because all the establishment Democrats prefer Davis.

18. Some of Davis' issues:
Davis' main issues include :

# Fighting oil drilling off Florida's coast.

# Creating increased pay for teachers without raising taxes by using FCAT bonus and gambling funds.

Davis also points to two legislative accomplishments:

# The Transition to Teaching Act, to encourage workers to change to teaching careers

# The Nursing Home Patient Protection Amendment, making it harder for nursing homes to evict Medicare patients

Davis, a fourth-generation Floridian, said he wants to go back to using the FCAT as a diagnostic tool instead of a punishment.

Campaigning in staunchly conservative Brevard and Indian River counties Saturday, Davis said Florida voters should loosen the Republican grip on Tallahassee because it has created "an unhealthy obsession with control."

Davis spent several minutes reminding the crowd of his vocal opposition to the government's involvement in the case of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo.

"I did exactly what you would have done if you were in my shoes," Davis said. "That wasn't just about Terri Schiavo. There, but for the grace of God, it could be your family and mine.

"I will stand up every day to make sure the government stays out of your personal life," he said.

Last month, Davis, of Tampa, was endorsed by Michael Schiavo, who fought to have his wife's feeding tube removed in the bitter end-of-life case.

Jeb may as well give up his inflammatory rhetoric against Davis. It's a pathetic display of the rapidly waning influence of a power-mad, term-limited politician.
