You could see it coming a mile away--careening toward us out of the great American mediascape like a dumptruck driven by a drunken halfwit, filled to the brim with rancid, smoldering horseshit. I'm talking about the pandering, of course. The scapegoating. The immigrant thing and the gay marriage thing and the flag burning thing. That's all they've got. Hating immigrants, hating gay people, and hating a form of self-expression that hardly anyone practices. Let's all take a few minutes out of our day and hate somebody, mmm'kay? How deliciously Orwellian. That's all that's left to them. Pathetic, isn't it?

In order to understand how the American right has sunk so low, you have to take a look at the rest of their so-called agenda. First, there's the energy policy, hatched in secret by Dick Cheney and Ken Lay and the boys from ExxonMobil. How's that going? Does $3 gas and record profits for the oil companies tell you anything?

And then there are those gigantic tax cuts for the rich--the ones that were supposed to pay for themselves while stimulating economic growth. How's that working out? We went from Clinton's budget surplus of $236 billion in 2000 to consecutive Bush deficits of $378 billion, $413 billion and $318 billion in '03,'04 and '05, respectively. The Bush tax cuts will have increased the national debt by an estimated $4.2 trillion by 2008, or 72%. Real wages are declining, and infant mortality in the US has increased for the first time in forty years--a sure sign that the economy isn't working for the least among us. But hey--fuck 'em. I got me a tax cut!

And let's not even talk about that drug benefit thing, or the social security thing--let's talk about national security, the thing Republicans are supposed to be really great at. Surely they haven't completely screwed the pooch on national security! Well, guess again--first there was 9/11, the most deadly attack on American soil by a foreign or domestic enemy since Pearl Harbor. They knew it was coming, but for some reason didn't lift a finger to stop it (too much brush to cut, I guess), and on that horrible day when people in lower Manhattan were jumping out of windows, Our Righteous Leader George W Bush sat in a Florida classroom looking like a bunny-rabbit with a lit firecracker sizzling in its bunghole because nobody ever imagined that anybody would fly airplanes into buildings, except maybe the people who warned John Ashcroft not to fly commercial in the summer of 2001. Then they declared war on an abstraction instead of on the people who attacked us. Then they cornered Osama on a mountaintop in Afghanistan but let him escape on freaking horseback (I'm not making this up, as Dave Barry would say) to Pakistan--our "ally" in the the war on the abstraction. Then they invaded a completely different country--one that had nothing to do with the people who attacked us OR the abstraction, but that did have a whole lot of oil sitting around, which kind of takes us back to those energy policy meetings--the ones that are still top secret according to the Supreme Court that appointed Our Righteous Leader in the first place.

But surely, you say, the conduct of the war in Iraq has been handled expertly by the grownup experts of the expert Bush administration! Surely our troops were greeted as liberators, the insurgency's in its final throes, and we're six months from turning the corner! Well, not quite. Turns out the whole thing's a gigantic clusterfuck--deja Nam all over again--with 2500 or so US troops killed and another 15,000 or so wounded, and who knows how many thousands of Iraqis dead and wounded, we're not even fucking counting them, that's how much we care, and now perfectly decent American kids who've been over there for two or three tours and are exhausted and crazy and either don't give a shit or are scared so permanently shitless that it's pretty much the same thing are starting to lose it bigtime, and their commanders don't think it's a big deal, really--and there's no reasonable way out at this point that doesn't lead to more blood and death and fire for the Iraqi people but Our Righteous Leader has NO INTENTION of getting out no matter what (that's for future Presidents to decide!) because we still have to get the oil, so we're building the biggest embassy in the world in Bag freaking Dad and digging in for the long haul. But really, it's going great--the media isn't telling you about all the Iraqi civilians we DIDN'T fucking massacre, the liberal traitor scumbags! So, I guess you could say the rest of their agenda isn't really going so well, and at this point, with the midterm elections coming and their poll numbers in the crapper they'd really rather talk about something else. Anything. Else. Like hatin' us some Messicans, for instance. And hate, hate, hatin' us some gays.

Well, fuck them. All the rightwing blowhards; all the self-righteous ideologues and wingnut whackjobs; all the fundie uterus-inspectors; fuck the whole steaming heap of them. They're not fit to smell the shit of ANY of my gay or lesbian friends, or any of the hard-working immigrant men and women who leave their homes and come here and put up with all the racist bullshit because they want a better life for their families. Fuck the Republicans and their demagoguery. Fuck them and their hypocrisy. Fuck them and their mean-spirited, intellectually bankrupt, unspeakably cynical, insultingly transparent, hilarious-if-it-wasn't-so-goddam-ugly, completely desperate posturing. Fuck them in the ear. Fuck them, and the dumptruck they rode in on.
