Who's really threatening marriages?
George Bush and his social conservative base keep beating the "Defense of Marriage" drum, claiming that allowing gay citizens equal rights threatens the marriages of their heterosexual fellow citizens.

Well friends, marriage is threatened, in fact committed relationships are threatened; but it has nothing to do with gays or letting them marry. A recent Pew Research Center poll found that only 22% of young, single adults, age 18-29 are looking for a relationship; 38% aren't. The remainder, of course, have already found someone.

The reasons for staying unattached vary; but, a lot of them sound like this:

It’s not that they take relationships lightly, or that they don’t want to become attached — eventually. It’s just who has the time? They’re working their butts off at college or in jobs that barely cover the rent, and feel obligated to find fulfilling, well-paid careers. It will be easier to make their marks, they think, unfettered by relationships that, let’s face it, can be so distracting.

I've seen other polls that indicate a sizeable number of young women, 18-29, don't expect to marry. The usual reasons given are disillusionment, after seeing their parents marriages break up; but, economic considerations seem to factor in. Starting a family, and buying a home in this economic environment is difficult.

1. Mr. kt and I, can not figure for the life of us, how gay marriage will
lessen our marriage or somehow take away our rights as married people.

Their argument is just so stupid, it defies any shred of decency.

2. Absolutely! If they want everyone to get married and procreate
they ought to make the economy fair enough for EVERYONE (not just the wealthy) to afford the "luxury" of marriage, home and family (and that's what they're becoming, sadly).

3. The #1 reason people give for marital breakdown is FINANCIAL
and given the economic battering working people have taken in the past 35 years or so, it's a miracle that 50% of marriages actually survive as life long pairs.

If you want to defend marriage, keep conservatives away from government.

Oh, and you might want to consider closing the bars, too.

Oh, wait, we tried that one already.

4. It's not just marriage they're after, it's personal freedoms.
Keep that in mind at all times. The war on drugs was just the first step in the repukes' quest to gain control of our personal freedoms.

5. People who encourage children to marry too young
Or people who won't provide birth control to their children when they hit puberty.

Kids who live in cultures where marrying at 13-18 is acceptable.

The above cultures.

People who put their personal "gotta-find-myself-because-I-married-too-young" feelings ahead of the needs of the families they started (many mid-thirties people who married too young).

You know, it's funny. There's big old Dallas, home to a strong Repuke base, hosting more episodes of Cheaters than any other town I've seen on the show. Is that just a coincidence? Maybe the show is based out of there. That or there are a boatload of cheating Dallasites.

6. According to Lou Dobbs, it is financial pressures on couples!
CNN's Lou Dobbs was oozing sarcasm on his show today about the the Senate being paralyzed by the gay marriage debate. He showed a chart that illustrated that the states that recognize gay marriage, or that have no ban against it, have the lowest divorce rate in the nation. Dobbs showed that it was the Bible Belt, and states such as Nebraska and Wyoming, that have the highest rate of of divorces in the nation. Dobbs said that the biggest cause of divorce is financial reasons and the failure to communicate about it.
