I reality, we probably can't. They serve a purpose as a sort of (woefully imperfect) shorthand.
But wouldn't it be wonderful?
What is a liberal?
Or a progressive?
A lefty?
A capitalist?
An anarchist? (well, that may still be operative).
A Green?
An activist?
Religious?
Secular?
Humanist?
Do any of those labels truly and effective convey a meaning? I'm sure some of you can define each one. I can't. I'd bet many people can't. And yet we use them to self-describe and to assess another.
I suspect that when your dog sniffs the neighbor dog's butt he learns more about that dog than you or I do when we accept a label as a way to define a person.
Maybe its time we actually made an effort to get know another person.
