FMA vote is today! Take action! Flood your Senators' inboxes with email!

http://www.hrcactioncenter.org/campaign/fma_postcards

In just hours, the Senate will vote on the Federal Marriage Amendment to ban marriage between same sex couples and write discrimination into the Constitution.

We know we’ve asked you to oppose this legislation before – but it's critical that in the remaining hours leading up to the vote we send a strong, overwhelming message to the Senate.

Here’s what you can do:

1. Flood your Senators' inboxes with email

Even if you’ve already written, write your senators again to let them know you strongly oppose the FMA. Click here to flood their inboxes with email!

2. Overwhelm the Senate switchboard with calls.

Call 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator’s office. Tell your Senator you strongly oppose the FMA. A sample script is below:

I am calling to urge you to vote no on the Federal Marriage Amendment. Throughout American history, the Constitution has been amended to expand and protect the rights and liberties of the American people - it should not be used to single out some Americans for discrimination. The Federal Marriage Amendment would single out GLBT Americans for separate and unequal treatment in the U.S. Constitution, the very document that is supposed to guarantee Americans' equality. Do not write discrimination into the Constitution; vote NO on the FederalMarriage Amendment.

Thank you again for your unwavering support.

Warmly,

Joe Solmonese
President

1. My asshole, er, senator, refuses to accept e-mail!
Showing his total disdain for democracy and the voters! Of course his name is John Cornyn, so what else would you expect?

3. Ms. Toad, where do you think I got that?
Perhaps from a staffer? He does not accept email, take it to the bank. I have been an activist in Austin, Texas for many years and I have dealt with Mr. Cornyn for a long, long time. I am not making this up, really. I certainlly KNOW how to send e mail! Thanx just the same...

8. Evidently the HRC link does not work for you. What a jerk Cornyn is for
not allowing his constituents to email him!

9. Actually,
I don't think he is saying that the email link doesn't work. What I think he is saying is that he doesn't receive any acknowledgement of his email and has been told something about email by Cronyn's staffers (what he was told is not clear - all emails are automatically filtered into the junk file; emails come in but are never read; whatever comes in doesn't make a difference to Cronyn).

Not quite the same as not accepting email (or the link not working) - and my suggestion in post 5 still holds. Sending an email, even if you think no one is reading it only takes a few seconds and you never know what might make a difference - even if you don't get a direct response.

11. It is possible he has turned me off in particular I suppose
I have written him some less than complimentary letters. I have great difficulty in dealing with his pompous arrogance. He really sees himself as Presidential material, he will run in the near future. The prospect is more repulsive than drinking toilet water...

5. What I am saying is that you made an assertion
that he does not accept email, without any indication as to how or whether you tried to send any or what indication you had that it was not being accepted.

His formal website provides a form for email, which I would expect to be treated differently from email campaigns (such as the one to which the original post provided a link), or even differently from emails sent directly to an email address (as opposed to being submitted via webmail). Without any information beyond what you posted I was trying to be helpful, since this issue is critically important to me. No need to get snarky.

FWIW, unless the form is just nonfunctional I'd send a webmail anyway. Takes a few seconds, and even senators publicly state they don't accept or pay attention email his staff probably at least take a sniff of the balance of email coming in and lets him know if the winds are shifting. A bigger stack of anti than pro, or even a shift in the relative size of the stacks is likely to be noticed.

10. My suggestion still holds
whether or not you get a response. Can't hurt anything - might help - and would take less time than you've spent here calling him names.

12. I only send him registered mail now with receipt requested.
Just to be further obnoxious. You are probably correct, I have history with Mr. Cornyn and I let it improperly color my dealings with him. I admit it, I am a 54 year old immature kid. I simply can't help myself, well I can & I should. I need to try harder.

Believe it or not I have a medical reason, it really isn't that good of one & doesn't excuse my behavior, something called ABI. It causes me to have to apologize a lot, like I need to now, Ms. Toad. You were being perfectly reasonable, I was not. PLease forgive me. Can we please start anew?

13. Hi acmejack. Glad to meet you.
No hard feelings. It's hard not to get discouraged - especially with a jerk like Cornyn.

I have a similar state rep who not only doesn't respond to emails, but refuses to take/return phone calls from high mucky mucks in the local community about relatively non-controversial issues. You could have knocked me over with a feather when Equality Ohio got a formal audience with her staff during our recent lobby day...I never know what surprise openings will pop up when I keep banging your head against the wall. Now if I could just get rid of the nasty headache I have.
