please explain for me the following:

how do i use it, or do I?
I have clicked on it several times, and seen no discernible change. is there any change? Does it do anything? What ?
Thanks in advance.

1. That gave me problems too.

It seems that it generates a link to the specific post within a thread that you can use in other posts to direct people to a specific point in a thread.

For instance, if you want to skip past the first 33 posts, and take people directly to post #34, you click Permalink in post #34, then copy and paste the URL in your address bar. When people click on that link, that's exactly where they go.

I haven't used it yet, but that's what it seemed to do.

Edit: For clarity.

2. If you want to bookmark an original post or a comment...
... use the permalink.

3. There are two ways to read a thread
One way is all the posts expanded in a single web page, you get that by clicking "View All".
The other way is each post in a seperate web page, you get that by clicking "permalink".

If you want to email a link to a post, or bookmark it in your browser, you could use the permalink.

4. Permalinks link to posts/blog entries, links link to web pages/threads

This is the link to the Crooks and Liars home page.

And this is the permalink to a story currently on the home page, titled Jon Stewart Hammers Bill Bennett.

If you were to bookmark this DU page and click the C&L home page link tomorrow, next week, or next month, the story about Stewart and Bennett wouldn't be there because it will have been archived off. But if you were to click on the permalink, it would go directly to the story. That's why you should always use permalinks if you want to link to a blog entry.

On DU, it works the same way. Copy and paste the URL in the address bar to link to an entire thread; to get the permalink to an indivdual post, click on "Permalink" in the gray bar directly below it, and the web page will reload with the post at the top (if nothing appears to happen, it's probably because the post was on top of the page to begin with). Then copy and paste the URL in the address bar.
