A LTTE from CA-48 Democratic candidate Steve Young (not the football)
No Gated Community

Trying to make the United States a gated community won’t solve the problem of illegal immigration. Understanding that immigrants are economic refugees fleeing deplorable conditions in their own country for a stable, safe, free country of opportunity, we must recognize that the solution cannot be at the border. The only way the migration of people from the south to the north will stop is when conditions improve there. So long as there is a pull to the north and a push from the south, people will find their way over, no matter how big, how long or how guarded a border fence is.

To truly address the issue, U.S. foreign policy must focus on eliminating deprivation south of the border, rather than signing treaties that drive down the standard of living in Mexico. We must focus on people, not profits, in our foreign policy. Until we do so, our domestic focus should be how to either temporarily integrate immigrants into society until conditions improve in their home country, or permanently integrate them as productive members of our nation.

The problem is a humanitarian crisis that extends well beyond the southern border. The focus must shift from the immigrants themselves and domestic policy to a broader view of why so many people flee, and how we can help alleviate conditions in Mexico and Central America to prevent the flow in the first place.

1. Why I stopped supporting Steve Young
"our domestic focus should be how to either temporarily integrate immigrants into society until conditions improve in their home country, or permanently integrate them as productive members of our nation."

Thanks for posting this. This is why I stopped supporting Steve Young, after initially agreeing to help with his campaign.

Young has completely flip-flopped on this issue. Initially he opposed illegal immigration strongly, and wanted to prosecute employers for illegal hiring.

Then he softened his stance, by advocating only that illegal immigrants be granted amnesty if they paid a $3,000 fine.

Now apparently, from this latest passage, he's in favor of completely open borders and amnesty. Talk about a complete flip-flop.
