voting record scores of 7 Democrats and 2 Republicans - check it out
Below is a comparison of voting records of two Democratic members of the House, five Democratic Senators and two Republican Senators. These consist of scores based on interest group ratings. To find out how a specific interest group arrived at its score-go to the link below, click on interest groups and then click on the specific interest group.

First I listed the interest group ratings for Representative Steny Hoyer and Representative John Murtha because they are likely candidates for Majority Leader if the Democrats win a majority this November and Nancy Pelosi becomes Speaker.

Then I contrasted five Democratic Senators; Sen. Lieberman because he is Sen. Lieberman. Then I listed Senators; Clinton, Bayh, Feingold and Kerry because they are likely candidates for the Democratic Party nomination in 2008.

Finally I listed two Republican senators; Allen and McCain because they are both considered to be likely nominees of the Republican Party in 2008

First is Peace Majority – a compilation of scores from a number of different peace groups – see website:

2. Good stuff! This data shows that even the more conservative Democrats
are more progressive than the Republicans on most issues.

Some scores are for conservative interests!
For example:
2004 xxxx supported the interests of the Christian Coalition xx percent in 2004.
2005 xxxx supported the interests of the American Conservative Union xx percent in 2005.

Representative Murtha supported the interests of the American Conservative Union 40 percent in 2005.
Senator Lieberman supported the interests of the American Conservative Union 8 percent in 2005.

31. I would have to say you are correct - at least as far as voting record
is concerned. Of course Mr. Murtha came out strongly against the war. But then again so did Pat Buchanan. Although I wouldn't want to compare those two.

Mr. Murtha has excellent scores on labor and education. But overall he seems fairly conservative for a Democrat and certainly more conservative than Sen. Lieberman on most issues.

7. Thank you for all the work. This one's a keeper.
I was struck by George Allen's '0' percent support for concerns of the National Education Association in 2005.

Is that guy a clueless yahoo, or what?

Most Americans list Education as one of their high imperatives in public policy questions. And George "Cement-Head" Allen scores a '0' percent in support of that concern.

Sheesh.

votes each senator cast. Those other votes are relevant, too.

http://www.peacemajority.org/ratings.htm
We include legislation in three broad areas: 1) votes to authorize and fund war, and to support its conduct; 2) votes for excessive investment in preparations for war; and 3) votes for strengthening global peace institutions.

The PeaceMajority Report focuses solely on issues of war and peace. We work with people across the whole range of the political spectrum.

Therefore, our scorecard ratings do not include legislation that focuses mainly on social, economic, cultural, or other such political issues.

We realize that many progressives believe these issues are interdependent.

We also understand that many conservatives believe there are other ways to address these issues, while sharing a commitment to peace.

Our goal is to form a new majority for peace as the key to our security. It will take people of many different political views to bring this about.

These scorecards do not represent an endorsement of any political parties or their candidates, and are offered for information purposes only.

12. I agree with you -- there are other considerations
Edited on Sat Jun-10-06 06:00 AM by Douglas Carpenter
For one thing, only votes that actually make it to the floor can be counted. With a very conservative congress we are not going to see very much sweeping liberal/progressive legislation get that far.

Also some votes are a lot more telling than other votes. For instance; Senator Clinton has a Peace Majority score of 60% while Representative Murtha has a Peace Majority score of 28%- even though Representative Murtha has spoken out strongly against the Iraq war, something Senator Clinton has not really done, yet anyway.

This scoring does not necessarily give a full picture of a representative's or senator's core philosophy. But it gives a snapshot. One has to dig deeper to get a clearer picture. Nonetheless its a good snapshot.

13. How about adding the Public Citizen scorecard?
http://action.citizen.org/dia/organizations/publiccitizen/scorecard/

It includes measures such as good government, environment, health care.

One thing I don't like about the Peace Majority scorecard is that they seem to think any vote for any military budget, ever, is bad - that attitude doesn't consider the efforts that went into improving a bill that will pass sooner or later anyway.

But then if they think that the US doesn't need a military at all :eyes: that would explain their approach.

9. Recommended!
More of this sort of thing needs to be presented in just such a fashion. So many folks, for understandable reasons, don't dig through the more esoteric charts.
One of the most important activities we must undertake is the education of voters, to avoid the uninformed, emotional, visceral voting that seems to characterize the radical right wing and an unfortunately high percentage of the more progressive majority.

14. Interest Group Ratings aren't that helpful
I don't know how they calculate their numbers or what they take into account.

For example, Lieberman voted for cloture on Alito, knowing he would be confirmed, but then against him. In my mind, he voted FOR Alito. Does the rating say he voted against Alito? Probably.

Also, are the votes weighted by importance?

15. each interest group determines their own method
if you go to vote smart..then click on on "interest groups" -- then click on the specific interest group you are interested in -- they will explain their specific method.

It does not give the full picture in every respect. but it gives a snapshot and broad overview. If for instance a person has a score of 80% to 100 % from the AFL-CIO it is a fair gas that they are friendly toward unions. If their score is 50% or less probable that they are not.

Still while you are there checking out vote smart - you have resources to dig deeper.

Initially I thought that first set of stats was a compilation of all that follow. But upon looking a little closer, I believe it is simply the stats for one group - peacemajority.org. I tried to verify but couldn't get the link to work.

But I believe you're right... for the first set, higher is more progressive. But I don't think that first set is a compilation of all the scores.

Edited to add: The first set can be accessed by going here:
http://www.peacemajority.org/ and clicking on "ratings" toward the top. It is comprised almost exclusively of military related votes since 12/2001.

the whole story...example...lieberman voted against a filibuster of the bankruptcy bill along with other Dino's knowing that was the only way to stop this bill worthy of a charles dickins novel dead in its tracks...then was able to vote against it when his vote would be noticed for the records and his percentages, but mean nothing, so the bill could pass and he could come out smelling like a rose...this is his and other dino's modus operendi....they are the gop's ace in the hole...to complement the other 4 aces they hold and the two up their sleeve.

Bush would not have his agenda he wanted without the help of those Democrats. He has it, and he got it with our help.

Some have had the courage to say they were wrong on Iraq, some have not.

Murtha has taken a beating for speaking out, even from his own party. Hoyer and Rahm bashed him for it.

But I admire him, conservative or not, because he is speaking out on things that are wrong.

That is what makes the difference.

and he is one of the very few calling out those who need calling out and trying to stop this madness

The conclusion I draw from this is that the best way to make America a better place really is to hold one's nose and try and get as many candidates with "D" after their names into power as possible, even if you think they're just "DINO"s.

That said, that was the position I held beforehand, and confirming an opinion is always easier than overturning it.

50 per cent in 2004"

This is a higher score than for Clinton, Bayh, Hoyer and Murtha. I raise it because there are several people who have criticized Lieberman for allegedly being overly sympathetic to Israel when the reality is that Senator Lieberman has ALWAYS adopted a balanced and even handed approach to I/P issues and indeed on most issues relating to the Middle East. While I vehemently disagree with Senator Lieberman's position on Iraq, I think he deserves more credit than is given to him
