Cheney selected himself as VP - what if he hadn't?
Specifically, if Bush had asked someone besides Cheney to head his VP search committee, it's probable that someone else would have been chosen as Bush's VP running mate.

Without Cheney and the influence of his PNAC buddies, how would this administration have turned out differently regarding the middle east? Clearly, Bush is no idealogue; I believe he would have parroted whatever his advisors suggested, but what if they had been a different bunch of guys?

1. Playing the what if game is an exercise in madness

I get depressed as hell -- Im talking can't-get-out-of-bed depressed -- when I think what the world woudl be like if the Supreme Court Jesters hadn't installed the chimp, and Al Gore was president.

2. Bush asked Cheney?

Behind the scenes, surely it was the other way around...

3. I think that it was never going to play out any other way.

Asking Cheney to "head the selection committee" was just a ploy. Cheney and all the PNAC guys chose Dimson as the puppet figurehead for THEIR administration back when he 'guvner' of Texas. He was the perfect empty vessel for their evil plans, what with his "born-again" bull and his Poppy's connections. It was the perfect storm.

4. IMHO, there's no "what if" equation here ...
The Neo-cons wanted Cheney as Prez, but knew he'd never get elected (health problems, no personal charisma, etc.).

So they ran the BushBaby, someone seen as a 'likeable' candidate to voters, someone malleable enough to do what he was told, someone uninterested enough to not question whatever direction he was given to follow.

Then install Cheney as the VP, 'valued advisor' to the president, who really calls the shots.

It was the PNAC buddies who chose Bush, not the other way around.

5. Other VP Candidates other than Cheney?
Anyone know the names on the prospective list of repub VP candidates who were interviewed by Cheney during the VP selection process? I only recall that some were angry that they had bared-their-souls to Cheney and then he selected himself.

6. As I recall didn't they interview a bunch of GOP governors?
I think that they talked to Ridge (PA) and the governor of Montana. Ridge got bought off with Homeland Security, while the Montana guy went home.

8. PNAC is the ruling group. The barons approved the PNAC plan.

Cheney is the key in the PNAC plan and he had to be inside the WH.

A combined force then chose George as figurehead and fund raiser and a person who could be manipulated, a person who would rise to a carrot on a stick persuasion (give us this speech in the morning and play your videos for three hours on the plane back to the WH and get one extra afternoon in Crawford. They needed a person who could pretend that he was born again, a person that the right wing religious would get behind, a person lemmings would get behind.

Bush was chosen and approved because think tanks studied it and helped with the selection, including putting the Bush name back in the WH for all the votes that would bring.

PNAC didn't want or need a person who had a plan of his own. George was rather perfect because he has always had someone tell him what to do.

There are no born-agains within PNAC. It is doubtful that Rumsfeld, Cheney, Wolfkowitz could have made it as President.

Cheney went along with George's selection because they knew they had a fairly good puppet whose strings they could pull and they put Rove there to pull it all together.

It's President Cheney now and it was from the beginning.

Don't be smoked and mirrored.

Don't give in to the dis-reality.

9. This sounds so sinister . . .
I was creeped-out how Cheney selected himself and there was barely a ripple about it. The CV was that Cheney was a plus for the ticket. I never could understand how easily everyone bought into this ploy. Especially concerning Cheney's major health problem. I can't imagine any other vice presdential candidate in history getting the nod after learning about his quadruple bypass.
