I heard a story that Repubs are planning to vote for Miller in VA Primary
The speaker was Larry Sabato. (http://www.people.virginia.edu/~ljs/) The story was on WTOP, DC's all-newz radio station. He avers the Repubs fear Webb and want to run against Harris Miller. Since there is no requirement to be a member of a party to vote in the primaries, this is all legal. He went on to say that Miller is favored in NoVa (close -in DC suburbs). That and a campaign from the Repubs to vote elsewhere against Webb will give the Repubs the candidate they prefer.

1. Of COURSE they are--they want the weaker candidate to win the primary
That way Howdy Doody Allen is a shoo-in. However, the GOP in the Tidewater area like Webb, and he's popular in the southwestern part of the state, too. We'll just have to see how much, I guess.

I find the primary system in VA odd as hell. When you have a primary, you motivate the opposing team to get out there and vote for the shittiest candidate on the ticket to boost your guy's shot.

It'll all come down to turnout in the primary, and if Democrats vote with the understanding that Webb CAN win in a general election against Allen by flipping voters and getting high turnout, but Miller can't carry the Tidewater and southwestern parts of the state. So a vote for Miller is, in essence, a vote for Allen.

3. How strong is Miller in NoVa?
Sabato says he's leading, but I recall another source saying that Webb is polling higher, at least in Fairfax and LowDown counties. I can see Miller ahead in Arlington, but not so much in the other two.

I couldn't find any Virginia pre-primary Dem-only polls online.

9. My sense is that he is strong enough against an unknown candidate, but
I think he has some serious trouble when it comes to a matchup with Webb. Think about NOVA and where a LOAD of that area's residents work--Pentagon, USMC Barracks, Henderson Hall, FT Belvoir, Navy Annex, Walter Reed, Bethesda, and so on and so on. Sure, some folks "lived" in NOVA like I did (never giving up my home of record, and paying taxes out the ass to my state) but plenty have bought a house and thrown down roots. I get the sense that the permanent party civil service types and the uniformed types WILL go to Webb. And the fired IT guys serving lattes at Starbucks will go the other way, too.

Webb is shy of dough, so he's likely minimized his internal polling efforts. And if I were him, and LEADING, I'd hold those results close, and still play the underdog in order to GOTV.

Get a load of THIS, though--sleazy politics, alive and well: http://brianpatton.org/2006/05/22/allen-v-webbmiller-poll/

Today, I received my first automated telephone poll. Instead of talking to someone, I just had to push “1″ and “4″ a bunch of times.

It had a serious flaw, though. After some basic questions, it asked me if the election was held tomorrow, would I support George Allen or Harris Miller, without mentioning Webb or considering that he might be the nominee. It then proceeded to give me the options: Press “1″ for George Allen, press “2″ for Harris Miller, then after a moment of confusion (should I push “1″ because I don’t want to inflate Miller’s numbers?), it finally said “press “3″ for some other candidate.” I let out a big sigh and promptly pressed the “3″ button. It quickly said “fine” (seriously, it almost bit my head off with that sharp, quick “fine”). It then went through all the other basic questions (Iraq, economy, national security, etc.) - including Webb in the possible answers.

What was odd, though, is what if I had just quickly hit the “1″ or the “2″ without waiting on the other option?

Webb is no choir boy, but he's the only one that could smack the shit out of Allen in the general. Wouldn't it be grand to get rid of Howdy Doody, and DENY him the chance to be a viable GOP candidate for PretzelDunce in 08!

2. It could back fire on them as Miller has the strong endorsement
of Mark Warner, the former governor. Further, Miller will ignite the progressive Virginia Democrats while some state Democrats don't trust that Webb is really embraced the Democratic Party.

Allen will have to run on his record which is Bush puppet.

I like Webb but could support Miller with no hesitation if he is the candidate.

4. I'm not in VA, but like you, I could go either way ......
... although I favor Webb on intangibles. I also came to favor him even more after seeing him and Miller do a sorta 'debnate' thing on Hairballz last week. I think Webb just came across as more charismatic and serious ..... a ' no shit' kinda demeanor that Miller just couldn't seem to match.

6. Progressives who like electronic voting
and replacing Americans' jobs with people on temporary tech visas can support Harris Miller.

11. Miller DOES NOT have the strong endorsement of Warner.
Warner's first choice for the run was Jim Webb who declined until the grassroots rose up to draft him.
Warner is no fool and knows that his Whitehouse chances would be greatly enhanced by Webb's run against Allen.

Miller has shown his nasty side by his latest peddling of the vile "antisemitic" accusations against Webb.

Webb has run an honorable campaign; he is an honorable man. He is no Republican.

It all boils down to one fact.

He can beat Allen. Miller cannot.

How does "President Allen" sound to you?

You will never regret your vote for Webb.

You will, if you vote for Miller

12. I thought that we...
...wanted to turn Virginia blue???? The only way that is going to happen is for republicans to change their minds and vote democrat. If you have another way...I sure would like to hear it!!

You can call them two republicans...but Webb in the Senate adds to the democratic numbers and hopefully toward a democratic majority. Can Allen do that?

8. Why does everyone trust Webb to be a true Democrat? He's a Repub
except for stand against criminal war. I'm voting for the Dem - Miller.

And outsources jobs and imports cheap labor? The one who put us in this unverified electronic voting mess in the first place?

Some Dem!

13. You are wrong.
Webb has received national endorsements from John Kerry, Wesley Clark, Carl Levin, Harry Reid and many others...why would they endorse a republican????

He has been endorsed by Chuck Shumer who is the head of Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, who said this about him:

"With Jim Webb as the Democratic nominee in Virginia we have an
opportunity to give George Allen a real run for his money. He's our
best hope for defeating Allen in November," said Schumer. "Jim's a
real fighter – He has the experience, energy and commitment to make this
a winnable race. He'll be devoted to serving the people of Virginia
from day one."

Larry Sabato, a political analyst and political science professor at
the University of Virginia, said, "If Democrats are listening, this
says loud and clear that if Webb is the winner, the national people
are going to put substantial money into Virginia and if Webb loses,
best of luck to Virginia Democrats…. This is as dramatic as it gets."

So the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will give Webb money, but not Miller. You think they would do that if he were republican????
