Hillary Clinton Faces Anti-War Critics
By DEVLIN BARRETT , 06.13.2006, 11:19 AM

A liberal crowd both booed and cheered Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton Tuesday after she encouraged Democrats to have a "difficult conversation" about their position on the Iraq war in order to win over middle-of-the-road voters.

Clinton's attempt to strike a moderate stance on the divisive issue of the war contrasted sharply with the angry words of another potential presidential contender, Sen. John Kerry, the party's 2004 standard-bearer, who called the war "immoral" and a "quagmire."

At a speech before a liberal gathering dubbed "Take Back America," the New York senator took grief from those in the audience critical of her vote for the Iraq war and her opposition to an immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.

1. the crowd chanted to bring the troops home now!
"You know, they have the toughest rhetoric in the world, they must watch old cowboy movies 24 hours a day. But when it comes to actually being tough and strong, they leave a lot to be desired," said Clinton.

Those sort of remarks were received enthusiastically, but not everyone was won over. As she left the stage, some in the crowd chanted to bring the troops home now.

4. Too much waffling. Soon the crowds will be banging flip flops together!
HC needs to say with emphasis that the war was based on a lie, she made a mistake voting to give the chimp war powers and that our troops need to come home now. She cannot keep playing footsy with the Repugs and be our candidate in 2008!

She also gives too much blind support to Israel.

8. no this IS her move to the left.

She bashed Bush, which is more than her husband has been doing lately. I'm afraid this won't be enough to convince us, though. Especially when she's measured against John Kerry's speech at the same event.

At least, not enough of them to swing an election.

And as the saying goes, the only things in the middle of the road are yellow stripes and corpses.

9. The time for the "difficult conversation" was four years ago, ma'am
But if you want to have it now, thousands of deaths and billions of dollars later, I suppose we can do that if you're really serious about having a conversation, and not just to sweep it away with a sigh and "Well, what's done is done."

The real question, though, is if Kerry is "angry" about how Iraq has turned out, why isn't Hillary angry too? Is she still trying to peddle the idea that this invasion is "moral" or is somehow not a "quagmire"? If she has a plan for getting us out so that it's not a quagmire, I'm all ears. If she wants to burnish her "middle-of-the-road" credentials, I have to say I've already seen this show starring Joe Lieberman and Mrs. Clinton, you're no Joe Lieberman. Are you?

10. Imagine if everyone acted like Hillary.
There would be no vocal opposition to the war from leaders. There would be no leaders who voice the feelings of a large portion of the public, who would then feel even more alienated and disenfranchised. There would be no progress in moving the public toward our viewpoint, because no one would be attempting to persuade them. It is a short-sighted, losing strategy without principle. One day she may realize too late that conviction wins votes.

What she does is not leadership, it's dissembling.

14. Be glad she is setting herself apart from those
that have seen the light regarding the war. That is the best gift she could give voters, particularly those that don't want her to get the Dem nod in 2008. I will not impugn her integrity; I'll leave that sport to the Republicans and not something I like seeing here at DU. But I'm glad she's sticking to her moderate/centrist guns to draw a clear distinction between her and other potential 2008 contenders.

Thanks, Hillary. Nice speech. Now step aside.

16. I think this will keep Hillary from running - there is no way to debate
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 02:51 PM by blm
your way out of it at this point in the war. Before Iraq had an election, it was reasonable to give them that chance to get their own government together, but, it's been a year and a half and three elections later for Iraq - it's time the US give them the signal that we're ready to start puling troops.

She will be unable to best Kerry in a debate on this and she will have to answer publically why she did not side with Kerry on his withdrawal plan while tough national security-minded Dems like John Murtha, Bob Kerrey and Gary Hart did.

17. Where was the "difficult conversation" before the war?
War should ALWAYS be a last resort and I have never been more ashamed of my country the way we just barged into Iraq without debating long and hard before wasting trillions of dollars and thousands of lives.

To hell with that. PULL. THE. TROOPS. OUT. NOW.

End of conversation.

19. I love how these hawkish Dems have kids old enough to serve in Iraq...
Hillary has no qualms about keeping other people's children in a perpetual war. If she feels that strongly about it, then Chelsea should sign up. WHile we are on the topic, Joementum's Matthew should sign up as well.

21. It would be interesting to find out which hawks that support this war...
have children of age to join the military. Why should the poor and middle class be the only ones fighting in this war?
