My guess is that Fairfax would break for Webb and Arlington for Miller (though I thought Alexandria would go for Miller)

10. I think Arlington will go for Webb--similar to Alex.
Jay Fisette sent out an endorsement for Webb to Arl. Dems. this week.

It's a pragmatic thing in Arlington--they want to get rid of Allen and think Webb has a better chance in other parts of VA.

How do we know they didn't? Maybe just not enough of them did, or Webb got a larger share of the vote than they thought he would. I still believe open primaries are an invitation for that sort of mischief... especially from a bunch like the Republicans.

I'm no fan of Webb. Look at Webb a Reagan worshiping, former republican. He beat the pants of a life long Democrat. There no way the republican in any organized number voted for MIller.

If republicans did vote in our primary, they voted for Webb. To be sure all we need to do is look at the primary results from an off year election for the Democrats where the Republicans did have a primary state wide.

41. au contraire
Webb was endorsed by Kerry, Schumer and other national Democrats. He's opposed the Iraq War since before it began. He is angry about the mismanagement of the Bush administration and that is what he's campaigning on. But the main factor is that Democrats know Harris Miller has no chance of beating the idiotic but beloved-in-very-conservative-VA George Allen. They want to nominate a candidate who is a decorated vet and who may be able to challenge Allen.

This is a red state and a progressive candidate will have difficulty winning here. It has to be someone who is more of a centrist.

59. Harris Miller...
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 09:37 PM by magnolia
...may be a life-long democrat but he was a former lobbyist and responsible for destroying many jobs through outsourcing. He is also against verified voting and paper trails. He was for the war when it was popular and against it when it got ugly...just like everyone else.

Webb was against the war before it even started and warned that it would be a 30 year occupation. He is liberal on social issues, against Bush tax cuts. The unions endorsed Webb.

I'm a life-long democrat and Webb is much more in line with my views.

Its as much strategery as anything. And isn't it interesting that the Repubs were supposedly exhorting their swarms to go and vote for Miller cuz they fear Webb. (In VA, one can vote in a primary without need to state a party affiliation).

51. Just a side note, it looks like under 200,000 people voted in this race
And there are over 7 million residents of Virginia. Divide that in half for people that actually vote and divide that in about another half for those who are democrats and you have approximately 1.75 million people.

My point is that there was approximately a 10% turnout among Democrats for this race. Since turnout is so damn low for primaries, is polling on them really accurate if they poll likely general election voters and not likely primary voters? And do pollsters actually poll likely primary voters or likely general election voters?

53. The Virginia Election site that's been linked a couple of times...
has the authentic turnout tally. For this election, it was about 3%. As far as polling does, since turnout is so low, no public polling was ever released on this race. That's one reason why no one really had any predictions heading into tonight.

Got a few family members to vote, as well. I got the polls about 12 hours after they opened and I was only the 21st voter of the day. So depressing.

I voted for Miller cause I respected him. I don't care if Kerry or Wes Clark did call me and tell me to vote Webb, i do not vote for fucking Republicans just cause "they might win."

Sorry, but I have more dignity than that.

Besides, who is to say that after he wins, he doesn't just flip his party affiliation again. No thanks!!!!

57. In what counties do much of the military reside?
I was wondering about Virginia Beach and some other places. Maybe some Republicans in the military crossed over to support Webb?

He was a Reagan Democrat, by the way. Did, indeed, start out as a Democrat. Changed over when Democrats were perceived to be anti-military. Democrats were not perceived as such when JFK and Roosevelt were President.

58. It doesn't appear that there were a lot of crossovers
because the turnout % was not high, except in NoVA, where there are mostly Democrats.

Some people hypothesized that crossovers would support Miller so that Allen could more easily win in the fall. So it's really hard to say.

There are a lot of military in the Tidewater area, but it went mostly for Miller. VA Beach went slightly for Webb but Norfolk and Newport News did not--and the Chesapeake results had not been reported last time I checked.

There are a lot of military in some areas of Arlington (near the Pentagon) but Arlington is very blue, and many of the county officials backed Webb because they believed they he had a better chance of giving Allen a tougher fight. It appears that throughout NoVA a lot of Dems used this rationale.
