now we know why they wanted to be able to take your land

Bush Administration Quietly Plans NAFTA Super Highway

Quietly but systematically, the Bush Administration is advancing the plan to build a huge NAFTA Super Highway, four football-fields-wide, through the heart of the U.S. along Interstate 35, from the Mexican border at Laredo, Tex., to the Canadian border north of Duluth, Minn.

Once complete, the new road will allow containers from the Far East to enter the United States through the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas, bypassing the Longshoreman’s Union in the process. The Mexican trucks, without the involvement of the Teamsters Union, will drive on what will be the nation’s most modern highway straight into the heart of America. The Mexican trucks will cross border in FAST lanes, checked only electronically by the new “SENTRI” system. The first customs stop will be a Mexican customs office in Kansas City, their new Smart Port complex, a facility being built for Mexico at a cost of $3 million to the U.S. taxpayers in Kansas City.

business done bushmilhousegang style

and you really think you will vote them out of office in Nov.

1. Remember, one of the earliest things Bush pushed was allowing Mexican
trucks to go much further into the US than ever before . . . undercutting the Americans who were willing to do the work . . .

2. It comes really freaking close
to my farm. I just signed the loan papers yesterday to build my house there and this thing will be just a few miles away. One of my friends who has a multi-million dollar horse operation will most likely lose their farm. This is nasty.

There are gonna be some pissed-off farmers and ranchers on this one.

4. They could ALWAYS take land for roads
It's in the original Constitution. That's the purpose of eminent domain, public projects like roads.

Just like immigrants aren't the problem, this road isn't the problem. Labor exploitation is the problem and until we start standing up for workers all over the world, we'll be at risk for ending up in a dormitory working 12 hours a day just like they do in China.

9. So have no roads??
There's no logic or point in that comment whatsoever.

Still, my point was, don't distort the constitution to gin up hysteria, no matter what hysteria you're trying to gin up.

10. get a grip - I'm talking about them taking land for commerce, not land

for roads. around this bushmilhousegang highway there will be land grabs.

12. That's how they build roads
It has nothing to do with Kelo. It's always been that way. The commercial land around the roads will be bought, just like it has always been bought. Cities needing to take land to make sure the road goes through will take it, just like they always have.

who ruled in favor of this dog of a decision. The gummint has always been able to take our homes for public works projects like superhighways.

Selling human beings out for commerce is new. That was for WalMart, not NAFTA.

7. NAFTA highway
Bad news for Los Angeles, if it cuts into their significant port trade. I guess the new NAFTA superhighway is attractive to Bush; why should US longshoreman and truckers benefit from the flood of cheap foreign imports that will ultimately decimate our economy? This way, the economic damage is even more pronounced and widespread.

15. Yes, the site and the author are full of crap, BUT this highway
has been in the works for a long time. The big stumbling block is the expense (not to mention the public outcry when people find out about it). I still question the "four football fields wide" statement though.

17. All I know is Thom Hartmann talked about this a lot on his show yesterday
at least on his local 3-hour show in the morning. That's how I heard about it, but I googled "NAFTA Superhighway" and found an environmental site and another blog, along with several local newspaper articles from places that will be directly affected with this highway coming through. And as horrible as this rightwing site and author are, why in the world would he write something bad about Bush unless what he disagrees with him about is TRUE?

This sounds like a disastrous project with the potential for bi-partisan rage & disbelief just like the Dubai Ports deal was.]

14. I-35 splits and runs right through downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul
Any road "4 football fields wide" would take out thousands of houses and a good part of both downtowns in a densly populated metropolitan area. I'll believe it when I see it. Besides, using the Mississippi to ship is probably a more efficient idea. It's been used for that for centuries, so what would be the point of building such a road through Texas, etc., when the Mississippi is already there?

18. it looks like a way for our "multi-national" corporations
to import more Chinese produce goods - the number of "US" corporations opening factories in China at this point is staggering.

This shipping of goods from Asia through Mexico into the US and Canada would directly impact all of those economies - more job destruction in the works.
