Missing 101st soldiers named
My local Clarksville TN (Ft. Campbell) paper is just now
reporting this as 'breaking news':
http://www.theleafchronicle.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage

Soldier killed, two missing from 101st
Screaming Eagles manned checkpoint where kidnappings happened

One soldier who was killed and two others kidnapped at a checkpoint in Yusufiyah, Iraq, Friday belonged to the 101st Airborne Division’s 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

Spc. David J. Babineau, 25, of Springfield, Mass., was killed after their traffic control checkpoint came under enemy attack, said Fort Campbell Public Affairs spokesman John Minton.

The two missing soldiers are Pfc. Kristian Menchaca, 23, of Houston, Texas, and Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker, 25, of Madras, Ore. All infantrymen were assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment. U.S. troops, backed by helicopters and warplanes, fanned out across the “Triangle of Death” south of Baghdad searching for the missing servicemen. At least four raids had been carried out, but the captives were not found, the military said.
White House spokesman Tony Snow said he had no new information about the search and could not confirm reports the two men were abducted.
“We’re still trying to ascertain their whereabouts,” he told CNN’s “Late Edition.” “Obviously, there is a vigorous effort to try to locate them and to bring them back safely.”

12. I tend to agree, as an agnostic....
but what else can we do?

If there's someone, something listening... I hope they hear me.

otherwise, I'm just sitting here, banging on the keyboard, affecting nothing.

I agree. But I'm one 'a them evil atheists. Maybe god's busy with the stanley cup?

Come on, the prayer thing gets really old. I see it everywhere and the assumption just seems to be that we'll all get on our knees and pray. I think the other side has been doing some praying too.

I hope they're found alive and unharmed, but I'm not praying to the deity whose name they were probably kidnapped in and who I don't believe in. This war is a religious war, made into one by both sides.

I think sound policy might have a leg-up on prayer. You know, like not doing stuff that puts you in a position where your fall back stragegy is pray, pray really hard!

I don't mean to offend the religious, but I'm sick of biting my tongue when told to pray. It's everywhere and I'm offended. I'm probably going to piss people off when I don't mean to, but I have a hard time expressing the way I feel when religion infiltrates every part of this version of America I find myself in.

27. The problem is
that if people go down on bended knee they will not do what is effective... (and yes I am about to piss off a lot of religious people), but Marx was right... Religion is truly the opium of the masses.

That said, if people dropped down on bended knee and DID something to bring the troops home I'd have a lot less of a problem with it... and for God sakes I do believe in a creative force, just NOT one that intervenes in human history... a stray extra electron, big bang, four billion later here we are.

26. Lol...I know, the Pope prays for world peace every Christmas
I have heard the same thing every Christmas all my life --- I hope they change one day, they can pray for water in drought areas, or a slow down of global warming...etc. Some other noble cause.

2. I guess I should feel sorry for them...
...but shouldn't, by now, anybody have seen that this is a criminal war and simply refused to serve?

Wouldn't a military prison be better than helping with a war crime?

6. Many of the troops joined as their only way to get an education
It's part of the plan by the corporate globalists to keep war going on forever. They've never enjoyed higher profits.

The rich elitists will never have their kids serve. Instead, they will say that this is an excellent chance for the "peons" to better their position in life. If they survive.

10. It is not just men, it's also women
As Jessica Lynch said, she just wanted a chance to see the world and get an education.

Carrie French, the 19 year old Idaho girl said the same thing. She is also now dead.

25. You never know until you ARE in that possition
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 12:56 PM by nadinbrzezinski
It iz easy to seat back and play Monday Morning quareback to things like Abu Graib (which for the record I want the ones who GAVE the orders to pay, not the E-3 that really will salute a can if it has rank devices for an officer on it) But yuo never will know, because fortunately you will never be in that position. I have... and not only wasn't popular with my kids (never mind it might have saved their lives), but it was not popular with those in charge who saw it as bad for relations with the Army

Oh never mind the order was ilegal...

But you will never know... and you know what you are lucky... but I can tell you this, a 19 year old, or an 18 year old out of A school is not equiped either

It is also easy to believe that the kids will be able to see the big picture... nope, their day is composed of cleaning weapons, getting ready to go out the wire, going out the wire, comimg back, cleaning waepons, getting ready to go out again. Somewhere in there is some sleep, and some food... maybe if they are lucky, some time to relax... but they are in a hyper condittion where they know full well they are fighting for their buddies.

As you may gather, been there, done that... why we told the kids before they left, keep your head down, listen to your sergeants, and come home.

17. Ben I KNOW one of the kids in that unit
what led him to enlist? Well them promises by a damn lying recruiter that he would get a college education. WE TRIED to disuade him and his brother. And by that I mean myself, my husband (USN Chief Retired) and their uncle, USMC)... we all tried

Once they signed up, well we have all given them tips to survive this... and yes I did mention this little thing about oh ilegal orders, but these kids aer way too young to realize what they are getting into, This kid, until a buddy died early in the deployment, took all of this as a fucking game... now he has realized it ain't a game... and trust me, right now he is probably very aware that it is NOT a game

You know the ones I blame are senior officers who should have had the spine to tell the CIC, no Sir, we are not getting the army we love into another fucking vietnam.

3. How very sad for these families.
Caught up in a civil war in a country that never threatened us. W thinks these troops are expendable. Note that none of his relatives are there.

But W wasn't there in Vietnam. We're seeing the aftermath of a chickenhawk administration. W skipped, Cheney had other priorities, and now they pretend to be capable of warrior status and sending our troops to die.
