Webb challenges Allen to 5 debates (VA Senate race)

Webb challenges Allen to 5 debates

By the Associated Press
June 19, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. -- Democratic nominee James Webb on Monday challenged Sen. George Allen to a series of debates to address the war in Iraq, U.S. national security policies, illegal immigration and the disparity between wealthy and poor Americans.

"Virginia's voters are sophisticated and knowledgeable and they expect and deserve a discussion about issues," Webb's campaign manager, Jessica Vanden Berg, wrote in a letter to Allen's campaign manager, Dick Wadhams. "We should not insult them or underestimate them by avoiding the tough questions."

Wadhams didn't immediately return a telephone message Monday afternoon.

Webb has said the Iraq war is one of many Bush administration missteps that have left voters disgruntled, and he thinks so-called "Reagan Democrats"--moderate, middle-class and largely rural whites--will return to the Democratic Party this fall.

A Vietman war hero and former Reagan Navy secretary, Webb broke with the Republicans over the Iraq war and is a key player in Democrats' fall strategy to win the six seats necessary to take over the Senate.

1. He'll probably have to give him at least one, maybe two...
hopefully Webb will be able to wipe the floor with him. Allen's already running ads, so this is going to cost him.

Virginians, and other interested Democrats, Webb is going to need alot of money, so give generously!

WESPAC is giving him money, so give there if you so choose.

3. I can't see Allen doing more than 3 debates.
Allen is quiet a dim bulb. Maybe asking for 5 is a way to force him into 3?

9. Running for Senate is "hard work" !
Eh, Georgie ? Especially when the Senate bores you.

It's no secret he wants to be President, which means he won't be in Virginia very much in 2007 and '08 if he keeps his seat.

That should be Webb's number one "debate" question

the Dred Scott decision in the debate. He seems to look up to the chimp so much.

19. Dim bulbs lost in November in VA
Let's hope this is a repeat.

The issue is George Allen is running on empty. NOVA (NOrthern VA - Fairfax County, Arlington County, Alexandria, Alexandria City, some of Prince William County)is definitely more diverse that it was when George Allen ran last. NOVA is where the $ is, look for a loss for George Allen.

Too many "liberals" are living in NOVA today.

5. Snarky reply from "the Candidate"
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 04:18 PM by The_Casual_Observer
Crocker Jarman says "Of course you would, sonny".

Allen will say, " I am too busy with important war time matters to waste time on 5 debates, one on a Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm will be enough".

Webb ought to immediately mention the stars and bars.

7. Allen's comment at Bolton Confirmation
When the democratic senators wanted a closed session for national secuirty reasons. Allen explained it wasn't necessary because as a prosecutor he had experience questioning witnesses in sexual abuse cases and he could be discrete. Kerry quickly corrected him and had to explain that the secrecy was about national security not the witness feelings. I'm paraphrasing but when I heard this exchange, I knew what we were dealing with here, an idiot with a smarmy attitude to boot. I hope Webb mops the floor with him. I can't believe they are thinking this guy is presidential material. Oh yeah, we got Bush now?

10. Don't let DLC "handlers" anywhere near Webb
Al Gore in the 2000 debates (remember the makeup in the second?), John Kerry ignoring the Swiftboaters - the handiwork of the DLC is everywhere to be found. Webb is a bright and credible candidate. Allen is neither. Time for some straight talk from the Dems. Screw the little issues, take on the war.

12. Great name, Trou. Welcome to DU.
For 15 years, a group of college buddies (including me) and hangers on went on the Trouser Trout Weekend every May at the opening of trout season. Camping on the river. Not much fishing. Lots of drinking around the bonfire. Finally gave it up about 13 years ago as we got too old to sleep on the ground and party like that. It was definitely a guy thing, and it was a lot of fun. We regressed a few years each spring then, though.

Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 08:36 AM by oc2002
DLCers will screw him the first chance they get. Webb is no liberal by any stretch, but he is not a sellout like the DLC is to corporate powers. also considering that the DLC supported Harris over him, Webb should not let them anywhere near him.

Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 07:19 PM by Joe Bacon
If it's Tim Russert, He'll stab Webb every chance he can

If it's Jim Liar, er, Lehrer, he's gonna kiss Allen's ass on stage.

If it's Larry King, He'll just throw softballs at Allen.

17. Allen will come up with excuses why he can't debate, or,
if he does agree to one or two, watch for him to make very rigid rules. All questions submitted in advance. Neither candidate permitted to directly question the other or comment on the other's responses. No topics of a personal nature.

No way does Allen want to be standing there with a shit eating grin on his face and have Webb or a questioner ask him to explain his affinity for the Confederacy going back decades or the racist graffiti on the high school walls.

If Webb is smart he'll forget all about his comment that looking into Allen's past is "hitting below the belt." The idiot needs to be pummeled from every direction.

21. all the more reason Webb is JUST thr right kinda guy who should
tell him no dice and play hardball and embarrass Allen for not being able to mentally debate and attack his mental state of mind and say things like "why can't we debate like in real politics, this kind of dancing around the issues implies a weak mind or fear of the obvious - that the voters will see that Allen is only looking out for his paycheck and his right wing cronies who are profiting from the war!"

or something like that!

29. No Confederate heritage, but a lifelong
love affair with the Confederate flag. I had the misfortune of attending high school with him and saw his racial hatred up close and personal in the graffiti he sprayed on the school walls the day our basketball team was to was to play a predominently black team from a working class neighborhood.

Allen was probably the only teenager in Southern California to drive around with Confederate flag bumper stickers on his car and he was one of just two racist morons to wear a Confederate flag lapel pin for his senior portrait.

Now when asked about all this shit the best he can come up with is he doesn't remember (the bumper stickers) or he sort of remembers doing it (the flag pin) (the graffiti) and thinks it might have been just a reflection of "youthful rebellion." Youthful rebellion, my ass.

Webb has to get this out there. Yes, it was a long time ago. Yes, people can change. However, rather than own up to it and express remorse over it, Allen just lies about it. Typical repuke.

18. welfare reform?
Democrats are obstructing Republican efforts at "welfare reform"? What's that supposed to mean? In the Clinton years, they pretty much eliminated "welfare as we know it." So what is it now? Privatizing Social Security? Or maybe they're planning to do away with Medicaid altogether?

24. such long periods?
Since Clinton's "reforms," people on welfare are limited to 5 years LIFETIME. Plus they have work requirements during that 5 years, and often inadequate childcare aid while fulfilling those requirements.

I volunteered at a church homeless shelter over the winter and was shocked to learn that most of the homeless were WORKING. I had to supply loaner alarm clocks to some who had to wake up by 5 to get to work on time, and some working second shift had written permission to be admitted to the shelter after lockdown. On minimum wage, they can't afford rent, and certainly not a deposit and a month in advance.

The only unworthy long-term welfare recipients in this country these days are corporations.

You need to get acquainted with reality before condemning indigent and self-defeating people on the dole. "Welfare Cadillac queen" is a Republican meme.

And my comment had to do with what further havoc the Republicans were planning to wreak in their You're on Your Own economy. I believe we're all in the same boat together.

32. George Allen is a far better campaigner than Harris Miller
Most observers agreed that Miller ran a horrible campaign. Not too bad for someone who's never run before, but not nearly good enough to be considered a viable candidate.
