Santorum comes out in support of "English-Only" sign at Geno's
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 07:55 AM by LynneSin
Well, I'm sure none of us are shocked. Nothing like going after the South Philly vote, an area filled with immigrants!

In plain English, Rick backs Vento

By CHRISTINE OLLEY

INJECTING HIMSELF in the middle of a South Philly controversy as burning- hot as a stainless-steel grill, U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (left) made an unscheduled stop at Geno's Steaks last night to wolf down a cheesesteak and stand behind its owner.

He voiced support - albeit in an odd, indirect way - for owner Joe Vento's much debated "Speak English" sign.

"It makes all the sense in the world to have a sign like this," he told a Daily News reporter after the paper was tipped off to his late-night visit. "There's not really an extensive menu here. I mean, come on, it's cheesesteaks, onions, et cetera. It's not that hard."

Santorum took a quick turn flipping shaved beef on Geno's grill and was cheered on by about 20 T-shirt-wearing supporters, mostly 26th Ward Republicans from South Philly, who'd been told the embattled GOP senator was coming.

1. I'm in favor of "No Psychos Allowed" signs at Geno's...
which means Santorum and Geno's management wouldn't be allowed in.

6. I posted yesterday about something interesting found on his website
It turns out the message he wrote about immigration was a bit harsher in the English version than it was in the Spanish version of his campaign site:

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/states/pennsylvania/counties/bucks_county/14850279.htm

Until recently, English-language visitors to the Santorum site could read a tough summary of the Republican senator's position on a measure he complained would make it possible for two-thirds of illegal immigrants to gain legal status - some by going home to get a valid work visa, some by paying a fine and partial back taxes.

But Spanish readers initially found no such language - no mention of amnesty, no mention of "felons" and "serial lawbreakers," as in the English discourse.

The Santorum camp said that was only because the Spanish version had not been updated, and that a word-for-word translation was soon coming. Now that's happened.

8. On which, he's essentially saying we want immigrants out...
Which just proves he's either completely wacko (very likely), or really stupid (also likely).

Even the article mentioned that TWENTY supporters came out and that was mainly republican ward leaders in the city. Hardly motivating 'swing-votes' there

11. No it won't
The people flocking to Geno's are the repukes sickos that think it's neat that Vento put that sign out there. They're patronizing Geno's the way we patronize a movie or cd put out by someone who supports our side of the political spectrum.

South Philly is filled with immigrants, many of which came in through the illegal route. Geno got his spike in sales from his stunt but this will die out and result in nothing for Santorum OR Vento's cheesesteak business.

I was the biggest Geno's fan until 2 years ago I took GOPisEvil, WillPitt and a few others for an authentic Philly Cheesesteak. I hadn't been to Geno's in years but fondly recalled the many nights after heavy drinking in Philly when we would head over to Geno's for some grub. When we got there we wanted to order French Fries and noticed the "Freedom Fries". I haven't been back since

10. The other half will go to Pats
(actually Pat's pretty much sucks too... both those places make horrible cheez-whiz soaked swill...
there are plenty of better places to get a cheesesteak in Philly)

12. Of course there are better cheesesteaks
the point of those who go to Geno's or Pat's is the fact that this is the heritage of the Philly Cheesesteak. You go because of what they are not the quality of food they produce. And even after the "gee-golly-whiz" mentality wears off, you go there because at 3am it's some of the best food to grub on after a night of heavy drinking

17. Can we call this guy the "CHEESESTEAK NAZI"?
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 09:19 AM by Julius Civitatus
Remember the "soup nazi" from Seinfeld? "No soup for you!"

This racist, xenophobic piece of shit Joe Vento is the "soup nazi" of cheesesteaks. No English? No chessesteak for you!

People like Vento make me ill. Say, two Japanese tourists come to his shitty tent to buy one of his greasy cholesterol bombs. They struggle to describe what they want with a mixture of sign gestures, utterly broken English, and lots of pointing at the menu. Does Vento reject their business? Does he kick them out of his establishment? Does he take out his rifle? Does he call the police?

WTF?

:wtf:

18. That's EXACTLY my main issue
Most immigrants living in Philadelphia including the illegal ones pretty much know how to order a Philly Cheesesteak - which is done with our own variety of Philadelphiaized English ie Name of Cheese desired and either "wit" or "witout" (whether or not you want onions. There - I have tought everyone how to order a Cheesesteak from Geno's.

The problem is that Geno's and their competitor across the street - Pats are a major tourist attraction because everyone knows about Philly Cheesesteaks and visitors to Philly learn about the rivalry between these two places.

So what you pointed out is really what the problem is with the sign at Geno's. It's not just anti-spanish speaking immigrants (both legal and illegal) but also anti-tourism. Philadelphia is a major tourist attraction ESPECIALLY in a few weeks when we have our biggest celebration with the 4th of July weekend (let's face it - that's our holiday - it all happened in Philly on July 4th). This is a celebration that attracts people from around the globe and now we have a fricking tourist stop with a sign that basically says "WE DON'T LIKE YOU NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING TOURISTS"

I hope that the Philly board of tourism removes all traces of Geno's from their visitor guides. Geno's can be the tourstop of racist, homophobic repuke assholes - which in Philadelphia aren't that major of a crowd.

19. Well said.
I love Philly, and have beautiful memories from that city.
Can't stomach the thought that this new type of language segregation in a modern America, immersed in a global economy, can take place in such a symbol of liberty.

I also think that the language discrimination sign has nothing but a veiled RACIST and XENOPHOBIC intent. If this were taking place some years ago, this is the type of sign this wingnut Vento would place at Geno's:

(that's a sign from a Texas restaurant in the late 1950s)

PS: How would the owners of that restaurant behave when confronted by Spaniards or Argentineans? They are white, caucasian as they come. I find it puzzling how racist Americans define all Spanish-speaking people as "Spanish" or even worst "Spanish race" (whether they are white, black, or of native-american descent).

26. Re: ROTFLMAO!
Im sorry, but I dont have a problem with it. If ya love our country so much. Learn to speak the damn language. Don't expect everyone to cater to your language. Who knows how many different languages the immagrants may speak. I would not expect the people at the restaurant to be able to speak 20+ different languages. Put the responsibility on the immigrant not the business owner.

29. You forget Native Americans, Cajuns, and many other groups.
People amuse me sometimes in their display of ignorance. Go to the backwaters of Louisiana, and good luck trying to understand the locals, who speak their OWN language, and sometimes will grudgingly speak English occasionally. Not to mention the French spoken there.

32. ...
Off topic a bit, but if you were to visit a foreign country, where they dont speak english, don't you would bring a translation book with you to help you get around and get things you need? To me it is common sense. Of course you would. You are visiting them. Show some initiative to fit in in their country...anything else is lazy

Americans tourists have been ordering food overseas for a hell of a long time with no apparent problem. But that's different, right? When they come visiting here, those foreigners better had learn English or they aren't going to get served. LOL
