What Grade Does Your Member of Congress Get?
David Sirota: "The Drum Major Institute today released its 2005 legislative scorecard for Members of Congress, rating lawmakers on how they voted on the core bills that affect America’s middle class. Go check out how your representative and Senator voted - and what grade they get."

And yet people will harp on their democrat senators and their ratings
Biden was 88% and I'm happy because I know that the one vote that kept him from being 100% had a major tie-in to the top industry in Delaware.

I guarantee I'll still see "John Kerry is a corporate shill" comments despite his 100% rating. I disagree vehemently with Biden's bankruptcy vote but if you had to choose between him and Santorum - well, hell, there's no real comparison.

What oil company executive would Cornyn not suck off?

What defense contractor would Hutchison not suck off?

I've also got the good luck to have Michael "Republicans Can Do No Wrong" Burgess as a representative.

In my filing cabinet I have stacks of letters from all of the above basically telling me that they've already made up their minds on an issue, but "thanks for sharing your view."

The two Kentucky Senators, McConnell & Bunning, both got big ol' Fs - no surprise.

The House Representatives from Kentucky all got Fs but for one lone C. Wanna guess what the political affiliation of the Fs and the one C are? Yep, the C is a Dem. Looks like he has a ways to go but it is a damn sight better than any repug that hails from the Bluegrass State.

Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 03:30 PM by iconoclastNYC
Get someone to run slightly to the left of him in the primary. If the person is more telegenic and likable he could probably win.

We have to challenge the notion that we are stuck with the Democrats we have today. We can replace bad Democrats with better Democrats. If the replacement is a good leader, the state might not be red for very long.

34. Gene Taylor is as
telegenic and likeable an individual you will find in this neck of the woods. No one ran against him the primary because they would not beat the man. He is a Coast Guard Veteran and his actions after Katrina were downright Heroic. He is far from a Bad Democrat. He is a fine representative and I'm glad he lives down the road from me. In South Mississippi we are lucky to have him.

48. Here's a little bit on Gene Taylor
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 09:40 PM by Hippo_Tron
As Bosshog said above, he's one of the most likable and telegenic politicians you will find. He represents the district that was held by Tent Lott before Lott became a Senator. It's one of the most red districts on the country but Taylor has fended off any serious challenge. His voting record is fairly conservative but he's voted against pretty much every trade agreement and against almost every tax cut for the wealthy.

The other thing about Taylor is that while he has a very conservative voting record, he is no friend to Bush and has no trouble standing up to him when the time comes (he was excellent during Katrina, Abu Ghreib, and taking on Bush for lying about the reasons for going to war). Likewise, he has very little loyalty to the national democratic party. He skips national conventions and voted for all four articles of impeachment against Clinton. Also, in 2003 and 2005 instead of casting his vote for Pelosi for Speaker during the floor vote, he actually cast his vote for none other than Jack Murtha. Of course, back then most of us didn't know or care who Jack Murtha was. He has said, though, that he will vote for Pelosi for Speaker if Democrats win the majority. Basically, he's the very definition of a maverick and makes other so-called mavericks like McCain look like complete loyalists.

59. Hello Hippo-Tron
Often I have the desire to wring Taylor's neck and then I calm down, take a deep breath and thank God he's my congressman because I know exactly who the republicans would put up to replace him. He whupped a Lott in 2004 and no doubt a "conservative" clone will run against him this year. I have seen some incredibly vicious campaign tactics here in South Mississippi and its all because the producers of such trash know there audience.

39. Sorry.
I won't buy into this notion that people from the South deserve what they get. I think in these states what you have is a silent majority of Democrats who stay home on election day because the national party abandoned them and because the local Democratic poltiicians think they can coddle up to corporate power and the Democrats will just vote for them because - what choice do they have?

When the 50 state strategy starts paying dividends I think you'll be happy to have a choice in some of these primaries and happy to elect demcorats who will get As instead of Fs.

We are going to witness in our liftimes the rebirth of the party of FDR and JFK, nationally and in states like Missisippi.

I never miss an election, our primary runoff is next tuesday for trent's opponent and I'll be first in line. I give money locally and nationally, I share my two cents worth, I work for the dems. I don't feel abandoned by the national party and I am very happy with my congressman. When and if a more liberal dem challenges him then I'll be revved up again, but it ain't gonna happen for awhile. Gene Taylor is a good man who knows how to get elected. He's one more on the dem side.

41. OK I think we agree
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 04:31 PM by iconoclastNYC
I dont know anybody on DU who advocates voting against a Democrat in the general. I think what progressives like me advocate is putting our Democratic leaders on notice.... we're watching you... the DLC isn't the only pressure group in play anymore... vote to protect our values and defend the middle class from corporate america or we're going to make life difficult for you... if you don't want to defend our values we'll put someone on the ballot in November who will.

Too many people only think in terms of D or R. There are OK democrats, there are good Democrats and there are great Democrats. We'd do better as a party if we gradually replace the OK democrats in Congress with great Democrats.

Now that the Internet allows common people like you and me to have this conversation I think it's more likely that in the future we will a Democratic Congress where everyone gets A's for defending the middle class.

26. Baca - C. Boxer - A, Feinstein - C
Edited on Tue Jun-20-06 03:25 PM by longship
I disagree on Joe Baca, who is a pretty damned good representative. For me, I'd give him a B. He misses an A because of a few of his votes. But he's fiercely pro-union, and mostly pro-environment, and has taken principled stands on many progressive issues. I will have no problem voting for him this fall.

Boxer is an A, a really great voting record.

In my book, Feinstein only rates C-minus. I would have rated her a D, but she still does some good things. But when she messes up, she *really* messes up. In particular, DiFi seems to think that it's her responsibility to protect us all from the horrors of terror. In doing so, her votes expose us *all* to the horrors of unconstitutional power grabs, the whittling away of our constitutional rights, to say nothing of bankrupting the country with an illegal war. I will likely write in somebody else for Senate in November.
