Just got hate mail in response to my LTTE! What do you think I should do?
My LTTE was in response to GOP apologists taking credit for Clinton's great economy. Several DUers helped me craft the letter, outlining Clinton's leadership in bringing down the deficit and producing a balanced budget and booming economy. It was published in Sunday's New Haven Register.

Today I got a hand scrawled note on a scrap of paper that said:

"You are like the rest of scumbags Clingon's whores you are sucking his penis. Hope both of you get AIDS."

Of course, it wasn't signed.

I'm considering a follow up LTTE but I don't know if it will get published so soon after my other letter. One thing: I am not going to stop sending LTTEs. This only strengthens my resolve.

1. Take care, CTyankee!
But ... I didn't know that you were a Klingon (I thought you were a human - HeeHee; when will they ever complete an English class?). Just don't like to be confronted with the facts, do they?

2. "Clingon's"?
I'm so sorry that you got a hate mail. Was it left at your home? It's scary to think that someone would go to all the trouble of finding out where you are and delivering a hate mail letter. :(

Perhaps you could post your letter. I never read it. It msut have been really good to elicit such a response.

10. Here is my letter.
The hate mail, BTW, was sent through the mail.

To the Editor:

Revising history is fun. As a recent letter to this paper shows, revisionism allows apologists for the Republicans in Congress to take credit for Bill Clinton's leadership in reducing our country's national debt by $360 billion by 2000 and producing the greatest economy in the history of our country.

If we are going back to the Clinton years, we should revisit 1993 when every Republican in Congress voted against Bill Clinton's budget and many denounced Clinton for leading the country into recession. The forecasters of doom and gloom were exactly wrong. The deficit began a steady decline that continued for the decade. Getting the deficit problem fixed (it was at a historic high of $290 billion when Clinton took office) was one key element in boosting the economy. And in addition, the tax revenue resulting from the nation's prosperity led in 1998 to the first balanced budget in 30 years. When President Clinton left office, our nation was in the fortunate position of having the largest budget surplus in our history. Today, as we sadly know too well, we are experiencing the largest deficit in our nation's history.

The Republicans are still in control of Congress and have been for the last 6 years, but this time with a Republican president. For 6 years they have said that cutting taxes on the very wealthy is what "triggers prosperity." The results speak for themselves. Something is obviously missing in this picture: a booming economy and Bill Clinton's leadership.

3. Glad to hear your spine got even tougher!
I would suggest keeping note in clean envelope, handling as little as possible and forget it, unless more come and get abusive. After you get a collection, write another LTTE and/or show them to the police.

Who knows, the idiots may give you enough good material that you can write a best seller about their feeble attempts to win through intimidation! They could make you rich rich rich! :D

Send a copy of it to the New Haven Register along with a simple LTTE about the "intelligent" responses/ideas GOP apologists -- and so-called Christians -- have.

On edit: and notify the police. Isn't it illegal to send hate mail like that?

5. I remember those!
Keep it in case the nutjob is a homicidal nutjob and starts stalking you--so you have something to show the police. Otherwise, just let it go. I wrote an editoral-page essay many moons ago, about our area's lack of jobs, and heard from some amazing psychopaths--by letter, on the phone, and in person (I didn't mention where I worked, but the rocket scientists at our local rag put the location in the photo caption--NICE WORK). At the editor's request (he saw another opportunity to drive the readers into a frothing rage), I did actually write a follow-up essay (main point: "Don't shoot the messenger") which didn't raise quite as much of a ruckus.

Note: That was the last time I ever wrote an essay or LTTE for our local newspaper, although I've been tempted to since.

He could be appointed into one of the many cabinet positions left by departing Bushbots.

I hear Condi is looking for a new assistant?

New Haven is supposed to be progressive?

8. Well
I wouldn't get to excited about it. The sender while obviously pretty filled with anger and tactless is entitled to their opinion and most likely nothing you say or write will change that. You might contact the paper and let them know that you got some hate mail and copy it to them. If it continues the police might also be involved as a heads up. One can't be too careful particularly if there is a family involved. Certainly do not stop writing LTTE's. I sent off two early this A.M. to a couple of media outlets, most likely won't be published, but ya never know. It's important for the people's opinions to be out there for consideration. At the very least you know that one person read your letter, so your opinion counted for something, eh?

without further comment; assuming of course, that there is a return address. They always hate it when you make them look stupid, not that doing so requires much effort.

NOTE: If you do anything like this, it naturally goes without saying that you take all advisable precautions; i.e., don't identify yourself or use your own return address. You don't want these lunatics to know how to find you.

13. They know where any letter writer is. The Register requires
that you sign your name and give your town/city. But if you are listed in the phone book someone can always look you up. But I'm surprised anyone would waste a 39 cent stamp on this!

This just proves further that these RW nutjobs are so obsessed with Clinton's penis they can't contain themselves!

I'm getting a laugh out of it, actually.

20. You might consider using an assumed name for your phone listing in the
future. When I first moved to Arkansas, I wrote a LTTE on the guy that killed the abortion doctor in Florida. Then, I started getting phone calls from the RW wackos around here. I had my phone number unlisted. Got tired of paying SBC $1.20 or something a month to have an unlisted number. So told them to list it under George Eliot. It's been that way now for 15 years!!

15. Thanks. I'm just glad that I have a state trooper living across the street
from me and he parks his official vehicle in his driveway. Plus, my husband works at City Hall and we'd get attention real quick if there is any trouble, which I doubt would happen anyway.

People that behave that way know deep down you are right and that just pisses them off. The fact that you got this reaction is a good thing!!!
