Are our Constitution and our system of government now obsolete?
It seems that our votes are no longer counted in elections. The Executive has decided he will only follow the laws that he likes and the rest he will ignore. The House and Senate have fixed the rules where no one can be defeated, even if the votes were counted, with their gerrymandering of districts.

Under the guise of a "war on terror", they have simply wiped out many of the freedoms that we have taken for granted in the past. Our "freedom of the press" is no longer something we can depend on to inform the public. They have become propaganda arms of the Military Indutrial Complex and the corporations that own the majority of Congress and the Senate.

Our "elected" representative have run up such a large debt that the people no longer have any say in what their tax dollars are spent on. The Treasury has become nothing more than a piggy bank for the Congress and Senate and their friends. The people no longer have any power or say in this government. What can you do?

2. Yes.
As long as we tolerate the cycle of "votes" cast on GOP-Corporate owned voting machines with no transparency and no paper trail with GOP regimes counting the "votes" and GOP legislatures backed by GOP appointed judges keeping the system as is, our democratic government is history.

Until those machines are put out of commission by sledge hammers, this corrupt cycle of one party rule will continue.

4. Publicly Funded national elections
is the only answer. If the corpotocracy keeps giving candidates their christmas club we will never again see policies that help middle class americans. You can have machines with paper trails but they will still vote against us, like they have the last 30 years. Don't anoint dems to sainthood they are complicit.....remember NAFTA

6. True,
but if we have the power to actually throw the bums out with fair elections, we can at least make our voices heard.

9. With gerrymandering this is almost impossible
IF we don't catch them with their hands in the cookie jar, in the closet with an underage aides or outright stealing we are doomed....one hell of a way to run a democracy...personally, I like parliamentary better. This 'winner takes all' in a 2 party system is obsolete

Federally funded Nationals
Proportionate Representation
IVR
Would be a good start....not in my lifetime

3. When people get tired of it enough they will rise up and.............
....fight back, but unfortunately that time hasn't come yet. What it will take for the general public to get so tired of being ignored that they fight back is anyone's guess.

5. Our 'democracy' is in dire need of an upgrade
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 03:56 PM by htuttle
Did you ever wonder why so few of the democracies that emerged after 1776 used the same structure that we did? Almost all of them use a newer version of 'democracy' that includes a parliament, proportional representation, and a much weaker executive, for example.

It's like the rest of the world's democracies are running Democracy 2.2 and higher, while we're still running an old patched up beta version...

7. The 'system' is just fine
The problem isn't the system as envisioned by the Founding Fathers. The problem is professional politicians and professional politician corrupters.

If we turn on the lights and get some open, transparent government back, the system will work fine.

8. But isn't that the problem ??
They will not permit the lights to be turned on. They are standing guard over the light switch.

10. Yes, that's the problem ......
they found the switch .... but that's our fault, not the fault of the system, per se.

11. So the "system" was not foolproof...
as some of us may have thought? The system has been breached.
