5. Love the title, but...

My own opinion about this is two fold: 1) Obama knows that Democrats cannot appear "godless," if they seek a broader appeal for the 2006 and 2008 electoral campaigns (and the right has done a good job of creating this appearance and framing the debate on this issue), therefore some concessions can be made to appeal to evangelicals, such as the Pledge of Allegiance, thus allowing Democrats to re-frame the religious debate; 2) I don't think he means that stances on choice, gay rights, etc. should be compromised.

In other words, it's about framing the religious debate, rather than being framed.

6. wouldn't it.........................
come off as pandering to Christian voters??? this late in politcs to start trying on a new tie.

as a compromise??? for what compromise means that each has to give up something to get equality.

7. I don't think it's pandering...

but that's my personal opinion. There are plenty of Democrats of faith who have been branded as godless, etc., because the right has been allowed to frame the religious debate.

If those people should speak out, they can appeal to Christian voters who are caught in the middle of the debate which has been framed - do they vote for the Christian right, who doesn't support their values, or do they vote for Democrats, who are Christians they share values with, but who have been painted as "godless"?

On compromise: Provided one is not compromising one's principles and values, compromise is not evil, and is necessary to achieve anything in politics. Presonally, I don't think Obama is suggesting Democrats compromise their values, but that they not allow the right to frame the religious debate.

8. I Think in This Case,
his being African American actually has something to do with his outlook. Faith and the churches have very different places in the black and white communities.

And I do tend to agree. Although I'm an atheist, the last thing I want to happen is for the Democrats to lose votes just because they insist on keeping all mention of religion out of politics.

10. I have never understood why African-Americans think that the
people who enslaved their ancestors nonetheless had some special relationship with a deity.
