To celebrate the 4th of July this year, my boyfriend and I will attend several picnics, watch the fireworks and send care packages.
Actually a girl at work and I are planning to send the care packages next week. We chose a couple soldiers on www.anysoldier.com to send out packages to. Some of the things that were asked for by the soldiers included DVDs, recent magazines, books, CDs that people have and may have already watched, read, listened to and aren't likely to watch anymore. We sent out an e-mail to the people in our office.
I didn't expect much of a response because when we set out cans to collect money to buy phone cards, we didn't get a very big response. But, within minutes, 2 people let us know that they would bring in some things to send. A local company also offered to send educational books to a soldier that requested them for teaching Afghans to read. Maybe it is the patriotism around the 4th, maybe people are just more comfortable donating "things" instead of money. Either way, I'm glad that we will be able to send some care packages to lift the spirits of a few soldiers and bring them a little comfort or entertainment.
If you would like to send care packages, please check out www.anysoldier.com, click on "where to send" and you can find a soldier that you would like to send a care package to.
