Six-month "
Friedman Unit" Iraq War extensions are the opiate of the presses, and reportedly the
Baker-Hamilton Commission's plan is to make it a double:
The bipartisan Iraq Study Group plans to recommend withdrawing nearly all U.S. combat units from Iraq by early 2008 while leaving behind troops to train, advise and support the Iraqis, setting the first goal for a major drawdown of U.S. forces, sources familiar with the proposal said yesterday.
Yesterday, Iraq PM Maliki said a
single FU was all it would take for Iraq security forces to clean up the Mess O'Potamia.
Anyone who's made himself an hour late by slapping the snooze button a dozen times knows this game. It's a disarming way to keep our armed forces there for another full year until the next excuse.
The only hope of getting our troops out is the GOP's utter soullessnes, which means that they might start drawing troops down in time to make a statement before for the 2008 election. Given that their frontrunner, John McCain, is banging the drum for
more troops, it's hard to be sure that will come to pass.
At least John Kerry's old question — "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" — has again been answered. As with Nixon, Bush's answer is: "
Who gives a shit?"
