“ACLU Nativity Scene” at the Univ. of Texas at Austin
The voices coming from my dashboard told me about this yesterday. I can't find any news link for it yet though.

AUSTIN, TX – The Young Conservatives of Texas - University of Texas Chapter announced today that they will be displaying an “ACLU Nativity Scene” on the West Mall of the University of Texas campus on Monday and Tuesday, December 4th and 5th. The group’s intent is to raise awareness on the extremity of the ACLU, and bring to light its secular-progressive efforts to remove Christmas from the public sphere. The display, the first of its kind in the nation, will feature characters that are quite a bit different than the standard crèche.

“We’ve got Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph in order to symbolize ACLU support for homosexual marriage, and of course there isn’t a Jesus in the manger,” said Chairman Tony McDonald. “The three Wise Men are Lenin, Marx, and Stalin because the founders of the ACLU were strident supporters of Soviet style Communism. The whole scene is a tongue-in-cheek way of showing the many ways that the ACLU and the far left are out of touch with the values of mainstream America.”

The scene will also display a terrorist shepherd and an angel in the form of Nancy Pelosi.

“The ACLU and other left-wing extremist groups are working diligently to destroy American’s rights to the free expression of religion,” said Executive Director Joseph Wyly. “We’ve already seen in Chicago an attempt to censor the nativity by a city government this week. It’s just more evidence that there is a War on Christmas being waged by the far-left in this country.”

Young Conservatives of Texas, a non-partisan conservative youth organization  , has been fighting for conservative values for more than a quarter century in the Lone Star State and publishes the most respected ratings of the Texas Legislature. YCT has chapters at universities across Texas including Texas A&M University, West Texas A&M University, Baylor University, University of Texas at Austin, Southern Methodist University, Midwestern University, Texas State University, University of Texas San Antonio, University of North Texas, Hardin-Simmons University, Texas Tech University, and Stephen F. Austin University.

Strangely enough, when they get in trouble with
this stunt, the ACLU will probably come to their
defense.

Just like the ACLU defended Limpballs.

25. that is the ultimate irony that they will never understand
these pieces of shit will be the first ones to run to the ACLU for counsel the next time they feel their rights are infringed....and the ACLU, because it is one of the last organizations that truly believes in liberty and NOT partisan politics, will take their case (if legit) without hesitation...

and naturally, the 'students' seem to forget that the ACLU has been working overtime trying to reverse the stolen freedoms taken by bush's war on terror..that is who they should point their rage toward

Little newsflash: Mainstream America wants no part of your sick adaption of Christianity.

#2 Fundie Christians have no sway over Christmas-it's not your holiday you hijacked it from the Pagans.

#3 The Chinese own Christmas-that's where all your dollars go at the start of the holiday shopping season. Look where all your Christmas decorations are made. See that "Made in China" imprint on your baby Jesus?

Idiots.

60. No baby in the manger due to child molestors, the wiseman would
be walking since their camels were stolen for corporate good, the gifts being given would all be Made in China, Mary would have her own Non-profit Think Tank to protest out of wedlock births, the shepherds would be draft dodging Young Republican Chickhawks and Joseph would be the preacher with his hand in everyone's back pocket

87. Well, the Baby Jeeeesus--the only innocent in the scene save the animals--would be played by a House
Page, who would be hiding behind a Mad Cow, writhing on the floor of the manger, against the unwanted attentions of Mark Foley, playing the shepherd. The sheep in the scene, quite sensibly, would be backed up against the walls of the manger shelter, looking at one another nervously and determined not to be abused again by the characters in this vignette. The Three Kings, Rummy, Cheney and Dumbya, would be bearing the gifts of death, destruction and famine. Ann Coulter would play the Virgin Mary, appropriate since she is so hideous both inside and out as to be unfuckable, and the role of Joseph would be played by Newt Gingrich, since we are talking about virgin birth, here, and he's an aficionado of the lazy blowjob!

You'd see no star in the east, because pollution would shield it from view. A pissed off angel might pass by quickly and shout "Hark, behold, I bring you tidings of great sorrow, which will persist as long as these assholes are hanging around! Vote them all out, and save yourselves!!!"

101. Ironically
Since it is at least an attempt at satire it is serving a secular purpose therefore the ACLU will surely have no problem with it, thus making the EXACT opposite point they are trying to make. It will show the ACLU is NOT an extremist group. Since it seems that most conservatives get their sense of irony surgically removed at birth this will certainly go right over their heads

Pretty much the traditional scene with a blue eyed baby Jesus (what else?) only with a twist. He's wearing a GOP armband and a Hitler mustache. Oh and lets not leave out the worshipers and the menacing Roman guards who have their spears pointed at their backs.

Local lefty religious folks and ACLU members should go the mall and pray and hand out flyers containing information about the ACLU's lawsuits that they've fought (and won) that promote religous expression in the public sphere.

Also, check out this DU post.

MacArthur, and Truman all give the ALCU letters of commendation? From one of the best journalists in America history, Edward R. Murrow:
"...the American Civil Liberties Union holds in its files letters of commendation from President Truman, President Eisenhower, and General MacArthur."

Ironically, that was the report in response to McCarty and his "ism."

LoL this says it all!
The definition of non-partisan is: Based on, influenced by, affiliated with, or supporting the interests or policies of no single political party: a nonpartisan commission; nonpartisan opinions.

Think they should work on changing their name to the Partisan Conservative Youth Organization before the big ACLU nativity scene.

Another thing that bothers me...WTF??? are they teaching these kids in college, not the definition of partisan apparently!

The ACLU's point is about majoritarianism vs minority rights in the public square...who knew that Lenin, Marx, and Stalin and gay men represent the "conservative" religious outlook?

Oh, wait....Grover Norquist does have a portrait of Lenin on the wall of his office in DC, and he is gay. Ted Haggert would be the partner. Then there's Stalin, whose gulag archipelago, secret police, and waste of young mens' lives Republicans have reestablished recently (in the name of "freedom", of course). Marx...well, considering they don't know how to read, they just take someone's word about him....

I recommend our side offer them miniature copies of the Constitution to place in the crib :)

63. Seems appropriate. A Republican religious display without Jesus.
The Republicans thoroughly hate the image of Jesus, yet build a religion built on the name of Jesus that completely ignores the man himself. So, a bunch of people standing around worshipping the spot where Jesus should be but isn't is about as perfect a summary of the Republican misinterpretation of Christianity as one could create.

Of course, to be completely true, they should replace the liberal figures with themselves, dressed in hoods or neo-Nazi garb. Maybe force non-white people (like Jesus himself) to fill the roles of the animals at the Nativity, since that's how Repubs see people.

Someone posted this link to the Alliance Defense Fund. They are apparently the right wing warriors in this war on Christmas. Here is a link to their form to request legal help or report attacks on Christmas

http://www.saychristmas.org/legalrequest/default.aspx

Now if this little stunt in Texas isn't an attack on Christmas, then what is?

I am encouraging DUers to contact them and report this unChristian nativity display in Texas.

Here is my letter:

Dear ADF,
I am writing to report an attack on Christmas by students at the University of Texas in Austin. They are planning a nativity scene that includes Gary and Joseph instead of Mary and Joseph. Their wise men are Lenin, Marx and Stalin!

This is unbelievably offensive to Christians and to our most holy of days. I hope the ADF can put an immediate stop to this heresy in Texas.

Sincerely,

ACLU Correspondence

A fictional 'war on Christmas'

By T. Jeremy Gunn

Last December, a group called Public Advocate for the United States
(which claims to defend America's traditional family values) sent some
Christmas carolers over to sing in front of the ACLU offices in
Washington.

Carrying signs reading "Merry Christmas" and "Please Don't Sue Us!" -
they also seem to have carried with them some rather strange imaginings
about an assault on Christmas. I don't know what the carolers thought might happen.

To tell the truth, the ACLU is not often serenaded by Christmas
carolers. So it was with some excitement that the staff went outside
and joined in the singing. They brought with them cookies and warm drinks
to share. One staff member, who is an ordained Baptist minister, did a
little witnessing about his faith to some astonished proponents of family
values....

They always portray the left as being a lot more extremist than it actually is. It's because they are obsessed with the old, '60s & '70s version of the left. They don't realize that all the truly scary people are on the right these days. I was around back then, & things are different now.

I'm pleased you managed to infiltrate such a large conservative organization and undermine it by promoting such ridiculous malarky. While these cowards who would never cast the merest sliver of a shadow in an Army recruitment office are spending time on useless, money-wasting and counterproductive nonsense, Democrats like you and me will be working on coalition-building, turning the government toward rationality and--of course--winning more elections!

Keep it up, my friend! I'll enjoy a victory cigar with you anytime.

What a bunch of dipshits. I can't tell you how glad I am to be someone who used to live in Austin rather than currently in Austin. Too many of them foreigners (translate - people from the rest of that backwards state) moved into Austin and it's not nearly as weird and hippie blue as it used to be. I hate to see Texas encroaching on Austin, it's just such a waste of a wonderful town.

I moved away two years ago to attend law school. And, I went to UT back in the late 1980s. But, I'd give anything to be on campus when this display goes up. The YCT are definitely outnumbered on campus. It should be interesting. As in, I wonder how long before the display is trashed. Did these freaks get permission from the administration to do this?

We're going home over the holidays, but sadly, I imagine all that will be left are kindling and memories by the time I make it down from Oregon. Sigh.

Peace,

151. The awful truth...
During the first years of existence, the Civil Liberties Bureau had a close relationship with the Communist Party, but by 1940 co-founder, Roger Baldwin, became disenchanted with it and removed the communist members from the board of the ACLU.

Probably in part because of the 1939 Hitler-Stalin Pact, but I'm just guessing. That was a wake-up call for a lot of American Communists.

The ACLU continues to have a reputation as being a leftist organization, but in fact, it defends people all along the ideological spectrum from ultra-conservative to ultra-liberal if it determines that their civil liberties are being infringed upon.

One ACLU founder was worse than a Commie, she was an Uppity Woman who fought for working people:

Among the founders of the ACLU, or as it was originally called, the Civil Liberties Bureau, were Crystal Eastman and Roger Baldwin.

Eastman (1881-1928) studied law at New York University after getting her undergraduate degree at Vassar. This twice married mother of two was instrumental in passing workers compensation laws and did extensive research into industrial accidents.

Wonder if the anti-ACLU gang knows this interesting little factoid:

Until the ACLU’s involvement no free speech defense trials had been won in the Supreme Court.

153. Battle Report: My own little war on Christmas
It’s just more evidence that there is a War on Christmas being waged by the far-left in this country.

That's right. And unlike another war I might mention, this one's actually winnable! Herewith, my modest contributions.

-- No buying Xmas prezzies from big box stores. By abstaining, I help to cripple those wasteful, anti-labor, market-warping blights. Mind, I never shop the boxes, so maybe I'm due for a Medal of Honor--just call me G.I. No!

-- Ridiculing efforts to debase and denature the commemoration of Christ's birth. Visualize the manger in Bethlehem. Now stand outside a shopping center. Ain't gonna find Waldo here, bub.

-- Celebrating Enlightenment traditions such as inquiry and reason. Great tools for examining yourself in relation to the Christmas tradition, among other things. If you can grasp how this intellectual tradition led to the U.S. Constitution, you can see what's wrong with state-sponsored creches.

-- Promoting culture critical of theocracy. 'Tis the season to go see Tartuffe, read a book by Oxford scientist Richard Dawkins, or rent Jesus Camp.

I imagine a Conservative Nativity or Christmas scene would include the Belgian tradition of the blackface character named Zwarte Piet.

The Baby Jesus with a noose in his left hand and an AK-47 in his right.

Statues of the "Three Wise Men" being Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and James Dobson. Karl Rove as Joseph and Ann Coulter as the Virgin Mary. And a black Muslim man, an hispanic woman and a gay guy with targets painted on them.

While "Onward Christian Soldiers' plays in the background.

What will they think of next? War on Christmas? Free expression of religion?

Noone will stop Christmas because most people treat it like an American tradition and not Jesus' birthday. It'll never change.

There's a difference between freedom of expression and shoving something down someone's throat. Get real.

173. I don't get it
I can see the point of having a zero tolerance on this issue due to past problems, nevertheless the local government here has a nativity display in the main rotunda that would cover most of a city block.

The difference is, is that there's also a display of Native American spirituality artifacts on permanent display, other religious groups get their kick at the cat and I imagine if the Wiccans asked politely they'd get their time as well (over and above Hallowe'en/Samheim).
