Obama on faith and "a new and better politics," from today's speech (VIDEO)
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 07:05 PM by jefferson_dem
Asked Shuster of CNBC chief political correspondent John Harwood: "Your reaction - mixing religion and politics in that way?"

Harwood: "It's smart. Democrats need to do more of that."

1. Now that Chris Matthews is in the hospital, I guess we have to
suffer David Shuster for a while. If he leans any further right he's going to topple over.

2. My feelings...
http://journals.democraticunderground.com/madfloridian/720

I don't want to get into a mode of "I'm a better Christian than the other guy."

4. Agreed. There's a fine line between principled humility and proselytizing self-righteousness.
By the same token, i don't want to get into the mode of dividing peoples and parties on the basis of perceived religious differences.

5. Instead of giving Dean credit...
for reaching out to the religious community, at least trying...those two Dems and others blasted him for days for not being righteous enough.

The DNC is still having evangelical outreach, a group set up, devoted to that cause.

I guess I was so stunned when this happened with Obama and Ford, all the righteousness because I was raised in the church, raised my children there. And if what they said offended me, I imagine it offended a lot of others as well.

There is a fine line between pandering and being geniuine.

6. Dean's "the white Christian party" statement was foolish and needed to be corrected.
The fact that our party's chairman said it was what stunned me, not the fact that Obama and Ford spoke out to correct it. Maybe i'm just having trouble understanding what they said that offended you so. Do you agree with Dean that the GOP is the "white christian party" in terms of the substance and wisdom of that statement?

8. They corrected him publicly and loudly, sounding superior.
Actually he was right about it. They could have left it alone, instead of making it sound like he was not worthy because of it.

But then I am not that concerned with either of them anymore. I am too sad and heartbroken over the hijacking of the church I grew up in and the superiority of the "good Christians" who have to lecture everyone else.

It turned out in researching that 85% of the Republicans in office, at least, were just that.

A lot of Democrats are going to be feeling like I am this time around.
No more going along to get along. We did that in 04, we just did that in 06. I would have voted for a yellow dog this time as well, so to speak.

But I am tired of the surface stuff. I am tired of the pretending faux outrage over every little thing any of our Democrats do.

I am tired of a party that votes with the other side so often. Things will be different from now on. I don't think I am the only one.

9. I just can't understand the target of your outrage. You say you are heartbroken over the
hijacking of your church but criticize those who try to put things back in order. Obama's point is that faith is NOT the exclusive domain of those conservative fundie fucks who have bastardized the central message for their own political purposes.

-- By the way, i'm no fan of sanctimonious "holier than thou" lecturing either. Hell, i'm not even a Xian.

10. He's right about that part. I agree.
Maybe if he and Ford had not come down so hard I might have felt differently. We do need to point out to the GOP that it is not just their territory, but in so doing we MUST not talk down to our own. And he and Ford did that.

I just can't get over reacting when others act like they are a better Christian. I guess it started with the day our church said we were unpatriotic for not supporting the war.

I guess I have seen so much pretend stuff in 04 and now from both sides.
I wish they would leave the religious stuff out of their talk, and just speak of what they need to do for the country.

I guess they are all going to keep going to churches to speak and campaign, but I don't think any of them should do that either.
Dean has tried to reach out, he hasn't done it perfectly, none of them have.

But it's the judging of someone else's religion that I can not take.

7. Obama's popularity when he makes prez will dwarf even Big Dog's
I love Shuster's slant - "Sure, it's OK for a sociopath like Newt to play the religious card, but I don't think real Christians like Obama should be allowed."
