I got a letter from the YMCA acting like the minimum wage increased that passed in Ohio was so horrible and now they have to raise our membership fee $2 a month to cover it.

This is B.S! I don't believe them for one moment that they have to increase the fee.

1. $2.00 a month
is little to ask.
Just think of all the people that are going to benefit from the MW increase ....

Smile.

2. They actually have that many min-wage employees?
Sounds fishy to me.

3. My Y hasn't done this yet
But they are one of the busiest gyms I've ever been in, so they're certainly not hurting for funds. They are so busy I'm considering giving them up, you have to wait forever to use the damn weights!

4. well
I actually don't mind paying $2 a month for someone to make a decent wage I was for the minimum wage increase and think it was long overdue. But at my job we just had reviews and everyone got a raise.. we didn't raise our price.

And it's the way they did it. They didn't wait and just increase wages for next year or new members they made a letter that made it sound like they were upset about the minimum wage issue and now they are passing the buck to us. I don't buy it... That is the right wing propoganda that if you raise minimum wage all those businesses will raise their prices that's always what they say to scare us away from raising the wage.

6. Write them back and tell them

you are happy to pay them 2 bucks to help their employees, and shame on them for not offering a decent living wage to their employees in the first place. Had you known, you would have demanded higher dues long ago!

5. Yoiks
aren't you on a contract at a fixed rate? Dig it up and see.

They may be acting honestly though - a thousand members at $2/month is $2000. Divide that into 10 full time minimum wage hourly employees and you get $2000/10 or $200 per month per employee, or $50/40 hours or $1.25 an hour raise.

9. $24 a year? Is that much to ask to cover the minimum wage increase?
Edited on Wed Dec-06-06 04:07 PM by Infinite Hope
It's like people think the minimum wage can be increased and businesses and organizations can automatically cover it without dilemma. Not to be rude, but get a clue. Many organizations and especially small businesses cannot afford minimum wage increases that amount to $1-2 PER HOUR! $2 PER MONTH from their members is not much to ask.

16. When wages go up, somebody has to pay the difference -
- so you shouldn't be surprised. If you agree with an increase in the minimum wage, why are you complaining about a lousy $2. a month?

Any place that employees people for minimum wage will either be passing that increase onto the consumer OR reducing staff. I'd have no problem paying the extra $2. a month to allow someone to keep their job.
