"Red America" means The Right Wing Conservatives.

Does this strike anyone as ironic?

When I went back to school in the 1990's,
a professor came by during a class discussion and
quietly said to me, "Your Red is showing."

He did not mean my comments were representative of Conservatism.
I'm not sure to this day if he was congratulating or warning me.

So...perhaps that's where it comes from

And under the Patriot act, the US was looking more like Soviet Russia every day...
