Maybe it's just that particular video, because not only didn't he look past me, he made it a point look me directly in the eye, ask my name, where I was from, and listen to what I had to say.
This was at a fundraising dinner here in Ks. There were tons of people there and I snuck up to the front of this huge banquet hall to try to get a photo of Obama when he entered. When I got up there, he was being escorted by Governor Sebelius to meet some of the dem big wigs who were seated up front. Several others and I kept a few feet of distance and snapped a couple of photos, through a throng of others who kept coming up to meet him. The governor pointed to some tables and explained who she wanted him to meet, obviously trying to head him in that direction. Instead of immediately taking the governor's lead, he saw me, stepped forward and introduced himself, asked my name, etc. It was very impressive, especially since I'm sure it was fairly obvious that I didn't really have any expectation of meeting him. His eye contact was direct, his tone sincere, and made me feel every bit as important as the elites who were there. That's all pretty basic stuff, but it seems like those traits are increasingly rare to find in a politician.
