"Music of Solidarity" Caravans Headed To Indiana To Support Conn-Selmer Strikers - 12/15/06

By Doug Cunningham

Activists from several unions are packing caravans with support for 231 striking UAW workers at Conn-Selmer’s musical instruments plant in Elkhart, Indiana. Steve Zeltzer of the Operating Engineers in San Francisco is helping with the caravans.

: “People are bringing food, they're bringing toys, solidarity statements - from St. Louis, from Peoria, Illinois, from Chicago, from Detroit, from Decatur, Illinois."

UAW Local 364 has been on strike for eight months in a fight to defend their pensions and their health care while resisting outsourcing to China.

: “These people who run these companies are all working together
against labor, against workers to defeat their unions. It's not just Elkhart, it's Detroit, it's San Francisco - it's in many places. So we have to wake on this holiday season, all workers, and build a united fight to defend our lives."

To support the Conn-Selmer UAW workers in Indiana, you can go to the web at www.soldiersofsolidarity.com for information on how you can help with this Make Music With Solidarity Caravan December 16th.

3. I went to high school in Elkhart
That was in the late 50s/early 60s. Conn and Selmer were important local businesses and a source of local pride.
